I want to make a canvas hunting pouch, I thought I would use really strong instant coffee to dye it. Do I dye the material first or wait till I finish the pouch? Thanks thmbsup

It can be done either way. I like to make the bag and then paint with a mixture of bioled linseed oil and powdered charcoal

Can you explain that procedure? Sounds interesting.

William

I would use walnut hull powder to dye the canvas, it's a lot stronger color.

I sell Walnut Dye Crystals, super easy to work with. Just add to warm / hot water, rinse your fabric & dry. Easy! Add some alum if it is something you are going to wash, like a shirt. It fixes the dye into the fabric. If you mix up a couple gallons you will be able to save it in a covered bucket & dye dozens of items. $5 a package + shipping...

I take boiled linseed oil and mix powdered charcoal briquet's, and paint it on the bag. This is not a true dye, it darken and stiffen the bag. How dark will depend on how much charcoal you mix in the linseed oil. I take a scrap piece and check the darkness before putting in on a bag.
The process will make the bag water repellent, but not water prof.
I am 65 years old so I don't want my egipment to look new
Hope this helps

I'm 61.  Recently had a new roof on house & bought the cheaper, 10 year warranty,  shingles.

Don't buy green bananas, either.  :>)

I'm 63. I understand perfectly. Ain't gonna start War & Peace either. At my age, w/my health, I don't want to start any long term commitments either.

i agree with the dye first and ask questions later ... it makes the project easier to work.  just one guy's opinion...
