Got my moose, elk and buffalo hides yesterday from braintan.com Very happy with the first two The Buff hide was a little dissappointed with some of the hair has fallen out of it but is still useable already started on the buff hide as far as cleaning the crap out of the hair.

Finally got my buff hide scraped after having a busy month of honey do s and Doctor appt.  My brother who has done a lot more tanning then I have told me about some kind of soap that you can use to soak a hide in that does the same thing as using brains. So has anyone heard of this method before and if so how well does it work?

Good job on the scraping jeco, I think I read it in one of my Buckskinning books, I'll look over them and let you know. I have heard of something like that though.

1 cup of murphys oil soap to about 3 cups of water for a deer skin, so adjust accordingly.
A better way to do it is go to van dykes taxidermy and order a gallon of protal and use that. Works good and does not leech out quickly, smoke it and it will be good.

Ivory bar soap will do it also.  I do not have the formula but know it works as Bulldog Ladies shirt was donme that way.  I will ask her for the formula when I get back to Oklahoma.

After scraping a hair on hide, I would use 20 Mule Team Borax (with a scrub brush) to break down the remaining fats. Then use Ivory Snow Flakes for the tanning process. Break and soften it from the flesh side and smoke it long.
