ok these may not be PC but we have been to rondys where you can't dig firepits, and fire ring is to small to cook in and keep the fires burning,  it came from a Lodge Cookbook,  uses charcoal briquettes
350 F  8"   11/5 top/bottom   400 F 12/6    If using a deep 0ven add 2-4 more coals
        10"   14/7      "                    17/8
        12"   17/8                           19/10
        14"   21/11                         24/12

Not going to try and copy the whole chart,  each briquette increases or decreases oven temp by 10 degrees.  ash accumulation decreases effencies of coals, whisk away
Turn rotate every 15 min or so to even out hot spots,  Have seen guys use the bricquettes and food comes out great, now ifn you live with a mean old Red Badger- he ain't about to use them modern things but to each his own, and am gonna try this if nothing more than in the front yard, point to make :mini-devil-28492:
Web site if they have a reprint or such   www.lodgemfg.com   this was in a booklet titled Camp dutch oven cooking  101

look for a set of bellows to  blow ash from lid of the oven and add it to your cook off kit!, a blow pipe works well also!

I love cooking so the art of dutch oven cooking has gotten my juices flowing so I was doing some web surfing and found a wonderful tool that will calculate the number of briquets needed to attain your target temputure and suggested placement for the mode of cooking (baking, frying etc) based on the size of the Dutch oven you are using.
