Some more work work on the hawk. I know one of the pics looks like it is brass. This was a 3 man job as none of us had ever made a hawk form a hammer

Some may concider this cheating. I have had an old Viet Nam hawk in my war bag. I decided to see if I could make some thing usefull out of it.

Pic one if what I started with and pic two is what I have so far.

I still have some finish work to do, then fit a handle and figure out what kind of fancy decorations to add

I would not call it cheating. Our ancestors would have altered something they already had before spending good money on something new...

beowulf

never liked the vietnam hawk , anything you do to change that profile is just an improvement ! thmbsup

Some nice work Old Salt!  And one of the reasons I have been wanting to get started in blacksmithing for so long!  I have been metal detecting for about 25 years and from time to time I pull up old axe heads, hammer tops, and things of that order.  I like throwing about anything that has a possibility of sticking, so I always held on to the axes to add handles.  The ball peen hammer heads I have tried to keep as well, and now I know why!  I have seen a lot of ball peens hammered out into hawks lately....once I get set up, I plan to have a houseful of them lol....
