Title: Modified store bought mocs
Post by: William on July 03, 2010
I had a pair of fringed suede knee high mocs that I decided to modify.  I cut the tops off above my ankle so I could fold the edge down to tighten them up without laces. They now fit better without laces, here's what they look like;

Those the ones you had last year at the Bone Yard? They look kinda comfortable.

Sorry for taking so long to answer, yes, they are the ones I had last year, now they have a little less leather on top but they actually fit better this way.

My basic problem is my wide feet and getting shoes to fit.  If the shoes run very, very wide I can actually get away with wearing 11 1/2 4E, but usually it's 12-12.5 3E or 4E.  If they only come in D width then it's size 13.  That puts me at a disadvantage when trying to get period correct and usable mocs or shoes.  I've looked at the Hi-Lows trekers from Fugwee and they seem well made but will they fit and be comfortable?  They don't have a modern toe box so I'm hestitant to spend money to just try them out.  Custom made mocs are even more expensive but will they last and look the part of my persona as well?

How them moc's holding up? I have committed a sin, but have been looking for a good reliable not so expensive rubber sole to apply to moc's.

They are still holding up well despite the suede leather construction. I've worn the bottoms pretty well but since they are double leather at that point it might be possible to re-sole them when holes appear.  Before trying to put a ruber sole on the outside, try some inserts first, they really help my feet that way.

For years I have worn the Minnitonka lace up tramper moc ,the ones that come up to about a hand width over your ankle.They have fringe around the top that i cut off and then grease em good with mink oil or bear grease waterproofing.These have a thin crepe brown sole that really helps with the stones and such.I got the idea a long time ago from Flintlock Larrebee in the old Buckskin Report.If they were good enough for old Flintlock they are good enough for me  dntn

Kinda reminds me of a powwow a couple years ago. Lady, and a couple others, says "I wanta buy some real indian made moccasins" I told them ok, put yer foot right here and we can get started, maybeso cost you about $45.00 for some nice buffalo moccasins. "Wow, $45.00, wait, I need the real ones like the indians wear, you know, the ones with the rubber soles" Needless to say I pointed them to the nice German lady sellin the minniewankas so they could get some "Real Indian Moccasins".
