What position will we need to shoot?  Peep sights allowed? When will we need to have the targets in and to whom? ;D

Post by: Hanshi on June 20, 2010
It's about time, in my opinion.  If we have to at least the end of July, that will be great.  Why don't we have this one from a sitting or kneeling position?  This is what I mostly shoot from in the woods.  We've done plenty of off-hand, already.  The target looks fine.
Title: Re: Postal shoot anyone?
Post by: Red Badger on June 20, 2010
I think that kneeling is fine and whatever traditional sights you have are allowed...

targets will be sent to me and I will score them same as in the past... I will post the pictures of sights on this forum but my decision will be final... unless I am the winner then you can challenge my decision  ROFL

My email is idicenterprises@hughes.net and anyone who wants to fax them can pm me and I will give them my fax number... Targets can also be sent snail mail to me at:

shoot what you want to shoot as far as caliber... same rules as always the judge makes the final determination on scoreing so if you use a 32 you might not get the same score as if you used the 54... but it is your choice...

See above for the list of judges...  strpot

We have 7 signed up so far, you will have until Midnight July 31st to send me your targets.  If your target has not been received by then you will be disqualified.   Winner will be announced not later than Aug 7th (give myself a little wiggle room, just in case...)  Targets received will be posted on this thread (which I am changing the name of) with the score that the Judge has allocated.  Videos submitted showing the shooting of this event will be eligible for an additional surprise (if I can think of one).

Any further questions -

Ladies & Gentlemen the firing line is now HOT for the July 2010 Postal Shoot!  Good luck to all!

I would like to join in, but I hope I can do better than I did at the Territorials last weekend. That was the worst I have shot in a long time. I finally gave up and shot a friend's pistol, then went back to the rifle and figured out I was using a really old can of powder and it had about 25% more power than I was used to.

Got you both added - that brings us to 19 shooters officially registered, and yours truly ...

It is 5 shots at the one target.... No one need know if it is your first or 50'th 5 shot group.... just remember no more than 5 shots in the target or it is an immediate default....   wtch

Still time to get involved....

If we get enough participation in the younger shooters we may have a youth division... so get the kid's, grandkids and neighbor kids   to shoot...
The pouch will be posted as soon as it is done....

I'm going to try and get to the range tomorrow.  Was going today but the yard really needed mowing after all the rain we've been having.  The cupboard was almost bare also.  So off to the grocery store and then mowing.  By the time I finished those jobs it was much to hot to go to the range.  Looks like summer is back!

I will just wish you all good luck and pass on this one as the only time I have ever shot any type of firearm was for dryball so I would not even hit the target so would be a waste of time for me lol
Title: Re: July 2010 Postal Shoot
Post by: flintboomer on July 12, 2010
I'm still in, but I just put new sights on my rifle and I am having to do a lot of filing on the front sight. Now I have to get back to the range, file until it is right and shoot the target. It is 40 miles to my range.

For those of you who have never done this before, neither have I, but it is all about the challenge, having some fun shooting, and maybe harassing each other a little bit.

Dixie Doll: You can just send in a blank target. It sounds like nobody here can hit the thing any way! :)

DixieDoll, if the only time you ever shot one was for Dryball, then that is that much more reason to do it--as a tribute to him, by doing this, you will be showing him that you have not given up on what he taught you.

Finally got a chance to go up to the range this morning.  I got there later than I wanted.  The 50 yard range was in use so I had to go to the alternate 100 yard range with 25, 50, 75, and 100 yard target frames.  There was no shade or benches.  I rolled a 4 foot cable reel up to the shooting line to put my gear on.  It was only 84°F but the heat index was right around 100°.  Right now it's only 89°F but the heat index is 106°.  Anyway I did manage to get off two shots.  One shot did hit the sheet of paper but was outside any of the target.  With the sweat, direct sun burning down on my somewhat sparse haired head, and the glare on the barrel, I was lucky even hit the target backing. :)  Oh well, I'll print another target and try to make it to the range EARLY in the morning. :)

No excuses now Ironwood!  blah With a massive target like that a young guy like you shouldn't have any problems at all.  srndr I remember that Texas summer sun real well from when I was stationed in San Antonio on the range. Clear skies, bright sun, 110 in the shade (none anywhere), humidity through the roof, long sleeved fatigues (short sleeves noy allowed on the range); the fun of working in South Texas.

I shot it at 07:30 this morning when kneeling was just like kneeling in a rice paddy, when finished got a cup of coffee and could not tell what was hotter the gun barrel, the coffee, or the hood of the pickup I had just put my elbow on, When you get done laughing just burn it the target.

Hanshi, Don't know how you're planning on doing it, but just something to think about. I put my target on a red backround instead of the usual cardboard that we have at the club. It made it a whole lot easier to stay on the white and just used it like a bullseye. My eyes ain't the best and this helped a bunch. After all, you havin' a few years on me, you probably need all the help you can get. ROFL

I got the rifle mostly sighted in and the target is on its way.
The wind can be pretty swirly here on the side of the mountain where my range is, so I wasn't happy with the target but it will have to do.

I am going to poke holes in mine hopefully this weekend! I, like flintboomer, will probably have to contend with some stout wind. My range isn't on a mountain though, its on the high plains (5,500 ft, approx,.). I think I can make a decent showing though ;)

btw flintboomer the elk steak was great. next time I see you I'll bring the speed goat steak for you to try  chrrs

You're keerect about the eye situation.  Every year I see more fuzz when I sight on a target.  I went out today with a rifle I acquired in the mid 60s just to shoot my target and come back home.  It hadn't been exercised in about three years but is very accurate.  Well, I fired two shots and had a "rifle malfunction", worn out spring, etc.  I'll try again this week if I can get an afternoon without rain like today.  I'll take my EV flintlock which is super reliable.  Them cap guns just can't be counted on (with exceptions, of course).  I guess guns can get old and not work just like people.  srndr

Ok, so my target is shot. It was shot with Flintboomer's .50 Hawken at the range he shoots at. All in all it was a great afternoon. Lots of talking, fair amount of shooting, and we even got to sit and watch a decent pair of Bighorn rams on the cliff face across the road from the range. I'll get it in the mail today. He even pulled a few nice trout out of the creek by the range while he was waiting for me to get there. flwa

Ok, finally got the targets printed. Printed 10 of them just in case.  Anyway.  Shot as soon as I got home this morning after clearin out a 50 yard range.  I live out in the county on my own 9 acres.  I work graveyard shift and was gettin pretty tired by the time I got dun.  It was also gettin hot too.  Mine is not the best in the world, but lookin at that teeny target way off down there, I was amazed that I hit it at all.  Please note that there be two balls almost through the same hole.  They was back to back shots.   It was great to burn some powder again.  Hadn't shot since last year.  This just reminds me that I gotta do it more often....  Thanks again.... spitpatch...

Target is on the first post in the thread....

I have 3 targets as of this morning plus mine and Lady Bulldogs... Still plenty of time, remember if you can scan your target you can email it of me or even fax it just ask me for the number.

all I ask is that if you can place a sheet of dark paper behind the target so I can get clearly defined bullet holes... As you can see by this Target from Sherpa it is difficult to make out the holes

I just finished my target up.  Can I just send a picture of it through email?

The only gripe I have is that the target is pretty hard to see for those of us that are getting up in years.  By the time I was focused on the front sight I could barely see the center at 50 yards.  About half the time I was just holding on the middle of the paper and hoping for the best.  Something with a little larger and darker bull would work better.

OK I want to thank everyone who is shooting... and all the comments about the target.... Well I did not choose the target to be easy and a little challenge is a good thing for us... I can not even see the red bull at 50 yards and Patience is still shooting low and to the right so It will be a Kentucky windage shoot at (to me) a blank sheet of paper...

If anyone wants to provide a better target for next time be my guest... Still looking for volunteers to be the Judge for when we decide to have another shoot

Anyway, I will be unable to meet the deadline...

Some pretty fair shooting , and congradulationto the winner . :applause: I still don't know why there are so many powder burns and a patch stuck in a hole  ROFL Things happen!!! strpot.  I havn't shot in a postal shoot sense the ml forum had their first one a few yeas back . (susp) caame  in 5th out of 6 shooters  srndr.
Now , I'd like to enter the next PS , The problem I have is I'm on medication that causes my vision to be worse than usual and 25 yards is pushing the extent of my focus , so if we could have a shoot at that distance I might get a hole or two on the paper . :'( Also , standing OFF-HAND , or off a STAFF OR STICKS would work . (susp) I wouldn't normally do so much whineing  srndr but it's been kinda a tuff couple of years health wise  :qz: Oh! while I'm doing all this whineing , how about using 3"x5" index cards with a X and 3 shots onlly ! fncg This set-up might help out a few other  "mature" folks .
