Am looking to get my 1830-1840 outfit together and need a shirt in XXL/XLT plus pants in 36/36. Will consider buckskin pants too if you or someone you know makes them.

Ah, good question! My persona has migrated out of the Georgia/Alabama area into Texas around the time of 1830 and has met several "Texicans" who talk of independance from Mexico. Rather than become an ax-man like his father and grandfather he's gone to seek his fortune elsewhere.
Hmm, well, lets see. a drop sleeve shirt from crazy crow, or a long hunters shirt from crazy crow and a pair of buckskin breeches, pair of moc's and you'd be set for warm weather.........

How much deerskin would be needed?
Minimum of 5 skins, two for backs, two for fronts, 1 for lower part of legs. Unless you can fins some really long deer skins. You can use the trims for fringing and waist band. They is pretty simple to make, missouri river patterns are simple enough and easy to follow. Wooden or brass buttons would work.

Well, big Texas whitetail average 9 to 10 sqft. Northern deer are bigger. Problem is, deer aint square so its hard to say how many square feet you will need. If you use grain skins they will be nice for fall and winter but will be clamy in warmer weather. Splits are good, crazy crow has some nice ones. The moccasin suede ones look nice and aint near a bad price. They may have some holes but they are easily patched.

I think the moccasin suede looks the part, but if they average 9 sq. ft, will I really need 5 of them (45 sq. ft.)? That's going to make them a $200+ dollar pair of pants, so if that's the case I may just go with cloth trousers and buckskin leggings to go with my footware.
Well sir, try this, measure a pair of loose fittin jeans, fronts and backs to get the total square feetage and go by that. Using brain tan hides from local deer it takes about that many for a pair of 36 x 36 breeches.

Good idea, this may take me all summer to get enough skins but it's a good project.
