Took the .54 Cabelas hawken Hunter out for exercise yesterday. Was experimenting with a couple of different home made patch lubes. They were all bees was and olive oil mixes of different proportions. All shot reasonably well with my standard hunting load of 90 gr.3F, .015 ticking patch, and .530 ball. Fouling was about the same as always and accuracy did not seem to be any different than when I use semi dry moose milk lubed patches. I did find that the softer the lube the less I needed so will mix according to outside temp. I have left a variety of lubes set up in a loading block to try at a later date to se if there is any difference after they've sat a bit. All in all a fun day. Let a couple of guys try the rifle as thy have never shot B.P. before. They seemed to like it a lot. I think they were some Navy guys from Whidby Air Station. C.W.
Lookin foreward to the next round ya shoot. How do ya like the cleanup with this blend? I have found olive oil to be alot easier to clean up after and with than most of the others.

Voy, the clean up was no trouble at all. I try not to over lube the patches and that helps out quite a bit. I have found on my rifles that shooting 3F rather than 2F I have less fouling. I do run a brush and patch through during a session if loading starts to get tougher. On another M.L. forum I used to be on there was one guy who used olive oil for all his lubing needs. I have not done any serious testing with it yet. This gives me just one more excuse to get on the range or to the gravel pit. won't have a chance for at least two weeks to go shooting again. Have a planed fishing expedition scheduled for this coming Sat.
[hmm] Olive Oil? Never tried it, I sure will, always try to keep traditional and they had to have had it back in the day, Thanks guys, guess ya can teach an old dog new tricks ROFL
Olive oil was called sweet oil way back when and thats what alot of em used. I have used strait olive oil for a while now and have not had any problems with it. Sure cleans up easier than most of the comercial lubes and works great as a cleaner as well. Never mixed it with beeswax or such as it seems to work just fine by itself.

hntr Yep,olive oil, mink oil, deer tallow, bear grease, etc, etc,,,,as long as its a natural fat,it'll work better than commercial lubes.Hummm wonder if peanut or corn oil will work,i know crisco works excellant.
Olive oil works great on dandelion greens for a salad if the game runs out thmbsup
I have never tried olive oil but corn and peanut oil work fine for me.
