Well, my gun, which caused such a ruckus last week, has finally arrived. But I don't know if I should be happy or foot-stomping mad.
When I first sent this gun down to Big Bear, I had just completed a total refinish on the stock. I mean that thing was perfect. Getting my gun back today, the first thing I see is that the hammer was poking out the side of the box. Then, as I'm pulling it out, I find deep gouges on the forestock, maks on the cheek of the stock that look like a dog had been chewing on it and scratches on the barrel. Along with that, it's obvious that it had been fired a few times and left to sit without being cleaned. And to add insult to injury, the man who had my gun had, some time ago, told me that he had replaced a couple screws that had gone missing. Then during the time between then and now he apparently took them out again.
At least the scratches on the barrel aren't too bad and should buff out fairly easy. I don't know if I'll be able salvage the stock.
So not only do I have to pay that crud for sending my property back to me, I have to pay to fix the damage he's done as well. Now that's a fine Howdy thank you ???
Hate to say it...but that's kinda what I expected.

There is some reason you feel HE should have to pay for sending YOUR property back to you? I am more than a little confused here... And you feel HE is responsible for damage during shipping? Any of us who have shipped rifles have horror stories to tell.
Somehow, I am beginning to feel something just doesn't feel right about this whole thing... [hmm]

Not saying that I shouldn't have to pay shipping. But I would expect it to be packed with the same care as when I sent it.
Is it useable?

Recon it is. I won't know for sure until I can get the stuff together to shoot and run a few through it. Once I see how she stands up to a couple loads I'll have a better idea on if I can get by with it or not.
Just makes me mad to see all the damage to the wood after all the work I put into fixing all the damage the previous owner did. You know what I mean?
Hmmmmm somethng is not adding up here ....
You sent me a PM saying it was in pretty bad shape when you sent it to him.... now your saying something entirely different....
and I quote..."And if I can, I'll try to post a pic or two when the gun gets here. Then everybody can get a good laugh at the ugly gun that caused all the fuss"
explain please....
When I first got the gun, it had damage to the stock right where the butt-plate meet wood that had to be fixed with epoxy filler. Most of the finish had been sanded partially off and the area around the lock was chipped and worn with round where there should have been sharp lines and sharp where there should have been smooth.
When this gun was first shipped to Big Bear, I had just finished doing all I could to fix the problems with it and the finish had only had a day to dry and set. At that point, it just didn't look right. That and the peices of art that people keep posting up as a gun told me ,by comparison that I have an ugly gun. But it did look a whole lot better when it left than when it returned.
As for pictures, I am using my parents computer right now and am still trying to figure out how to get pictures posted from this thing. I'll get them up as soon as I figure this dadblasted thing figured out.
John, the problem is that I am having trouble believing you...there seems to be some inconsistencies throughout this entire story when compared to other things I have heard.
I've sat back and watched this since it's started and not said anything. We all want to help our fellow muzzleloaders anyway possible,Lord know I've done my share of outfitting a young fella just starting out with nothing but his smile in return. I kinda saw where this was going to go,and God bless all who tried to help, and it's true,we DON'T know his situation, but really, ship a gun to someone to attend a shoot or rendezvous, that you are going to hitch hike to,and things happen, your at home and you don't have anything to shoot the gun with? Where did all your shooting supplies go? How were you going to sustain yourself at the event? What supplies were you going to shoot WITH? Am I missing a lot of something here?
The same thing happens after any disaster, lots of folks pony up in the short term, but whats needed is something sustainable for the long term. My GrandPa used to call it "Tuggin' on yer heart strings"(sounds better in Polish)
It sound like I'm a cold heartless bast***,but, without lookin' into someones eye's to see were they are really at,say a prayer and God will provide. I know,he did that through this forum. I don't believe God needs the internet to get things done. I hope this doesn't get me tossed of of here, but I couldn't stay quite any longer.
You aren't saying anything that the rest of us haven't wondered about.
Well said Pathfinder - nothing here to get you tossed!
i too have watched this very closely as well. the lack of shooting supplies for the gun, well that was odd to me from the start, how was it going to be fired once it arrived? then to ship your gun off, and hitch hike after it? that to me was reckless. lots of things dont add up here. i also dont see how a few scratches and dings to the wood would make the gun unusable? even if they happened during shipping, my own guns have dings but are fully serviciable. there were a lot of offers for new items, even a gun made here. somethings just dont add up.
I am locking this topic - It is obvious to me that this will get out of hand...
