Not exactly new fangled, as far as my researching can place it as about 1860 - 1870.
Neat design, and the barrel is interchangeable with other calibers that were made for the Babcock Rifle.
and an adjustable peep sight was fitted into the tang.
would love to have one like it, but can't imagine the cost.
in .32, and .40 , and .50 caliber.
squirrel, coyote, and deer.

now thats different.
NOW I KNOW WHAT I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS NEXT YEAR. [hmm]
interesting !the scary thing is it qualifies as an inline ! ROFL doesent really look like it would be all that difficult for a good gunsmith to build !the receiver /frame ,whatever you want to call it would be the hard part ,and a good machinist should be able to turn that out if`n you could get the specs on the thing !
There are a few designs that have shown up here about those nefarious inline type rifles, I remember one a while back about an inline harpers ferry rifles or musket....
Also just to stir the pot - would an under hammer not be considered an inline?
Nope...nipple not in line with the bore. Just rotated from side to bottom.
This is one really neat design..
thanks for that - I have only seen on underhammer at the Rondy's i have been to and I was to busy scoring to get a good look at it...
A friend of mine hates underhammer rifles, it appears. [hmm] He told me that when he unboxed a new underhammer he'd bought; he looked at it then took it outside and shot it! 'shok' Ah, poor rifle; DOA! (susp)
I have found illustrations of this rifle in only 1 book online, but a description of it in another.
and these pictures are from a gunbroker auction from a few months ago.
it is an original, and definitely not new.
i like the lines of an underhammer, but they are fairly commonplace.
but this one. i would like to see a metal plate on the cheek side to protect from cap splatter.
that was not an issue back then as caps were thicker metal than they are now.
CVA used to make caps from copper with a powdered fulminate inside, and they never split.
they came in a small black plastic cap tin. you had to use a knife blade to get them off of the nipple.
but they worked well, and sealed the cap end of the barrel.
I do not own a inline and would not want a modern inline, but this is something else.
just plain different.
how would you make a harpers ferry to an inline?
and how bad would the thread counters at a modern rondy make fun of you for having this rifle?

now THAT is one neet rifle ... i like. alot.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMM. My nephew is gonna be moving in with me and is a gunsmith. Me thinkin mebe have him look at it and mebe build one ifns I can come up with a barrel.
Voy
Good luck with that build...wish my nephew could build me one....
I dont think he will have a problem with the build. He has already built several replacement receivers for modern centerfire guns and has had them come out perfect in function and in form, so I know he is good.
Voy
If he works in the shop like me, one is tough and # 2 much easier...soooo, when he gets yours figured out, have him make me one too...It's a really neat design isn't it??
Talked to him about it today and he wants to start on it as soon as he gets here. I'm thinking that he will love it from his response and now I just gotta get him to understand that he's gotta start with a manufactured barrel before he starts making his own. Making a barrel from scratch is something he hasnt done yet so he wants to learn that as well.
Will keep everyone posted on it when he gets here and gets started on it.

We'll be waiting,,,but maybe not patiently waiting...
