Title: How To:
Post by: heatherhistorian on October 27, 2009, 06:53:47 PM
Wondered if anyone could post topics under this area on how to make or do things related to the fur trade?  Thought of cooking on a camp fire, soap making, crafting and such...

For those of you who have a problem getting you camp fire started, I have a suggestion, while it is not period correct, it will work  with damp or even wet wood.
You can take saw dust and mix paraffin  wax or bees wax. Melt wax in a double boiler and stir in saw dust and place in old muffin tin, or any old pan and then cut into 2 in squares
CAUTION: hot wax is highly flammable.
Place wax under your pile of wood and apply match.

To start your fire:

1. get man to go to next campsite where fire is going
2. have him get a red hot ember and bring it to your campfire site
3. while he is gone get out the burn cream and dressings (because you know he wont take o tong or gloves with him)
4. get fire started using the ember he brought back in his burnt hands...
5. show him where the burn cream is and tell him to fix it himself
6. get fire started using the ember and cook yourself a pot of coffee
7. hand him a nice hot steaming metal cup of coffee and finally
8. Ask him why your not at the Howard Johnsons down the road!
ROFL  serious
for future reference try taking lint from dryer, put in cardboard eggcarton, pour wax over it and then cut/tear into squares,  oh make sure it not after you have washed dog blankets as it will stink to high heaven,

or slip the matches out you have in waterproof container hid in your possibles bag!

And yes I've mixed woodshavings with beeswax to use as firestarters.  I like to use the mini muffin pans, instead of the larger ones, takes up less room to store, and you don't really need a great big hunk.

I'm heading out this weekend to a Hanta Yowin gathering-no men, no kids, no dogs (I don't like that part).  We're doing Survivor Weekend, with all our guns and knives and such.  Hope to make some good pics for this board.  Guess I'll be getting out my trade wool dress and leggins.

You wash and dry dog blankets in your home washer and dryer,WOW,that would lead to permanent residence with the dog for me.
