For years I have always carried a ground clothe' along to sit on and for some warmth... recently I purchased a second one to take along in my roll for cover if need be...
What I use is the 8 oz drop clothes from Home Depot. A few marbles or rocks tied into the corners and walla intstint roof'
Had a friend fall years ago white tail hunting and dislocate a shoulder he laid for hours till help arrived ... he never hunted alone since. He would have been in sad shape iffin he had to spend the night without ANY blankets or other gear.
Don't take the mindset "ONLY GONNA BE IN DEE WOODS A COUPLE HOURS"
Honestly you don't have to treat canvas just wash with Ivory soap.
MEE 2 CENTS
yep, a few good survival tools are necessary ALL the time in the woods. Lighter (ok flint n steel), little bit of food (chocolate's my favorite), Water, knife (maybe two) and yer gun of course. A blanket roll on a tump line would be a good thing to sling over the shoulder too.

survival cant happen if you are not prepared for it and you never know when that could be that is why it is call "SURVIVAL" ;D zan is right you should have a kit made up and accessible at all times .when outdoors.
Ok, here are my 2 cents worth.... I never go out into the woods (even here around the house) with out m basic survival kit.... it isn't period correct but we are talkin my life here... i alays carry the cell phone (not much use - but I might get a signal), my flint. steel & a pill bottle of dryer lint, my whistle, knife(s), water purification straw, space blanket, and first aid kit. Oh yeah my kit is in a bag i made out of dayglow orange when unraveled makes 2 5X10 ft. panels to aid in air search operations...
I have used this kit in the Rockies and a similar kit in Alaska and lived to tell the tale....
If someone has better ideas and stuff than I do, I need to know about 'em.
Three Hawks
Three Hawks,
I agree with you about everything, and i do use the lint even for starting my fireplace (there is just so much of it around!) but a also have a small tin of carbide I carry for those wet times when a fire is no easy task... a little moisture and a spark and walaa fire from a rock that will burn long enough for twigs to dry out and catch...
And i think I read some place that carbide lamps were used on the frontier, at least in the rockies.
Jim
Where can you get carbide now??

It's in the cans on the shelf above where my #2 lead shot used to be in my garage.

To be quite honest, I don't have a supplier now, my last purchase was from a shop going out of business in Colorado Springs CO when i lived there. They sent me a flier sayin they was givin up so I went down and bought 5 5lb tins, I figure they will last me my lifetime seeing as when I teach a hunter ed class I use 2 rocks to get the fire going and only carry about 5 oz in my survival kit.... Now I am in Oklahoma and hav'nt even looked for the stuff

Out of curiosity Jim...in Manitou there use to be a blackpowder shop by the name of "The Mountain Man"...is it still there? That use to be quite a place. I was out there in 1976...hadn't been shooting blackpowder too awful long and that place amazed me. I couldn't buy that kinda stuff around here...everything one could need they had. Was back out there in 81 and they temporarily closed due to moving into another building. Would like to get back out there one day if it's still there.
Mountain man was still in business when I left Colorado 3 years ago... I never had a chance to go into their store and now am kicking myself for not making the effort...

thats a nice rig youve got pathfinder, where did you get the pack, or did you make it?
Carbide, including the miners lights can be obtained from Lehman's.com 1-877-438-5346 toll free. They sell a lot of Amish and non-electric tools, etc.
Quigley and Red Badger...the Mountain Man shop is still in Manitou. I was there last week...that's where I picked up that Bob Roberts thrower....they also have a website, although not everything they carry in the store is on the site yet:

Yup,right on top of thing's! Guess I'll reply now! I made the Knapsack using Mark Bakers instructions in "Pilgrim journey#1 or 2. Been using it for a few years now,has a couple of feild repairs now and it's AWSOME!!!!! I've tried going back to "regular" haversack's and just can't seem to do it. Goes with me each time I go into the wood's,and it hang's by the front door as a bug out kit!

Doggone right! Noah didn't wait til it started raining to begin building the ark!
Does any one here know how to properly turn the H D drop-cloths, into "oil cloth"?
