I have no idea. It is my usual carry piece & it is loaded with .410 shotgun shells, either #8 birdshot for areas where there might be innocent people close enough to catch a slug if I miss, or 000 buck if I need to blow a huge hole in something... I have never fired a .45LC in it.

I have no problem with it Rev. In my experience a derringer is a derringer...all shoot about the same. And the .45 Colt is a traditional cartridge. If no one minds, go for it.

It is going to be difficult for me to participate. Ben Avery range has some weird rules regarding targets & this one may run afoul of them. If a target has human features (in this case the ears) they won't allow them. The standard police training targets, which are almost identical, are just fine. No ears... Go figger... Also, minimum range is 5 yds. For the pistol shoot we did on Jeans & this forum I had to shoot at a longer range than was called for, because they won't allow anything other than 5 yard increments. To drive somewhere out in the boonies where I could shoot would be fairly expensive, as my truck only gets 8 miles to the gallon... ROFL

Remove the ears if you need to, use whatever range your required to...it's just for fun.

Jimmy.... I took my derringer out to shoot it for the first time today.  Got everything ready..... forgot to double check for ball size.  Derringer is a .31 not a .32, so the ones for my rifle didn't fit.  And no place in town to buy any. Soooo...... you're safe for now!       But I did happen to take my rifle along and put some holes in paper.  Hadn't shot for a good ten years, so I didn't think I did too badly.   And yes I took pics, but........ my computer died today!  Thank goodness I have the public library to check the forums!!!!

I understand that Mouse, almost made the cardinal sin of trying to stuff a .54 cal ball down a .45 cal caught myself just in time.... I need to make a couple of pouches - one for each caliber I own...
Title: Re: Derringer shoot?
Post by: mouse on November 01, 2009
After ten years, I finally made it out to the range and did some shooting Friday afternoon.   I had started out the day intending to shoot my .32 derringer and then switch to the rifle, but ......... the derringer is a .31 and the balls I had were too big.  'Somebody' took things for granted and didn't check before she took off!   That's too bad.   So I switched and used my little .32 TC Cherokee, 30 grains of powder.  I know 50 feet isn't all that far, but  you have to know that I'm a poor shot, can't hold my rifle steady.   I didn't think I did too badly.

This is the short range right behind my cousin Tom's house.  Just over the first ridge is a huge field with burms to shoot against for long ranges.

Yep, I'm happy.  Had a good afternoon shooting.  I'll be doing a whole lot more of it from here on out.
(http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd311/maysmicky/guns/100_6942.jpg) (http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd311/maysmicky/guns/100_6941.jpg)

Left side shows my first five shots.  I did some measuring and shot number 2 would have been in the middle of the six ring on the dualing target,  number 4 is an 8, 1 and 5 are 9's, and 3 is in the first ring around the bullseye.
On the second set of shots, at least I got them to more or less line up.  Number 2 is first ring out from the bullseye,  3 is a 9, 1 & 4 are 8's, and 5 is a 7.
I tried to remember some pointers that Crow Killer gave me out at Holcomb Valley, and that helped a whole bunch.  Now I just need to practice, practice, practice.  Burn powder!

I'm a better shot with a handgun, and from the looks of the paper at fifty feet, I think I could have done pretty well against you in this here derringer shoot at ten feet, Jimmy!

Title: Re: Derringer shoot?
Post by: mouse on November 01, 2009
Rev, I use a .310 roundball with the thinnest patch possible in my .32 rifle.   I thought my derringer was a .32, but found out it's  a .31.  Those .310's won't even come close to fitting down the barrel.  So you think a .300, or do they make one smaller?
Title: Re: Derringer shoot?
Post by: Rev on November 01, 2009
Try loading without a patch the .310. .300 is hard to find...
Title: Re: Derringer shoot?
Post by: mouse on November 05, 2009
Don't think I didn't try that, Rev.  (I even looked down at the gravel for half a second 'til I thought better of it)  The derringer is a .31, and the .310 doesn't even come close to fitting that barrel, even patchless.  It has to be a .300 or smaller yet.  Or I sell the derringer.

If the Derringer is a muzzle loader as I thing it is, it should take a .300 or
smaller PBR. I think I know a guy who may have a mold that will work.

If you have a couple of sheets of steel,  you can place a couple of balls between them and roll the balls down to a smaller oval size.  Might stablize if the rifling spins them enough..like a patched slug.

Ok, laugh at me all you want, 'cause I sure do give you enuf cause to shake your head!   LMAO   I laughed at myself!
I finally, FINALLY, shot my little derringer yesterday!   I'm definitely going to keep it around and go buy that huge bag of shot that I know I'll never shoot up!

Sandpapering and steelwooling balls down far enuf to fit in the little beasty is a time-consuming job, so I only did enuf to get by.  (Of course it wasn't enuf!!!)    LMAO...... first shot...... 7 1/2 grains of powder.......... I watched the ball kinda hit the target that was stapled to a piece of plywood and bounce off of it.  It was all I could do to find where the ball hit.  I couldn't believe my eyes so I tried it again.  Same thing.  (And it hit right in the same area).  Sooooo...... up it to 10 grains of powder.  Twice!!!   Hmmm......    So, I tell cuz Thomas that I need a hay bale or something so that maybe the ball would go thru the paper.  He just happens to have one and over we go to a new spot.   And...... I put like 12 or 13 grains of powder in this time.  Ka-pow!   Finally...... a hole!   And ..... I ran out of balls.

LMAO........ ok, one problem was that the balls were too big to use a patch with, but not quite large enuf to get a good tight seat.  And the last ball being a papers width larger, better fit.  It was a good experiment though!

I've highlighted where the first two shots hit (in the 5 point ring).  My eagle-eyed mom helped me determine that I hit the bullseyes with the 3rd and 4th shots.  I would have had a half good score if they'd punched paper.   But, since you only go by the holes......... I have one counter, the fifth shot in the 9 point ring.    So you win Jimmy!   This time!!!

Don't think ya wanna try ta scrub that outta yer barrel.
Not sure what I'd use. Have ta ponder that awhile [hmm].
Need ta be thin, lubed, maybe...some what stiff, but not too stiff...OR,
can ya make a patch that is the same diameter as the barrel? Probably use a
pencil with it's eraser on as a ramrod.

I have the same Traditions Deringer and it is a bear to load. The barrel has to be polished clean and lubed. The ball is loaded bare with no patch.
I have a buckshot mould that makes balls just about perfect for mine.. and it also makes a 4B ball that I have tried with a patch... it is very hard to patch a ball that small and the power is very lacking, but it worked.

I have a little Rem 32cal revolver too... Can I shoot this??? Wouldn't really be fair when shot against the little Traditions.  At 10ft, with front an rear sights it is pretty deadly

I have use leather wads for a lot of my OP wads in shotguns and rifles and have had good luck with them... I have tried them with my Traditions VPD but the ball has to be tight or it will fall out so the wad didn't help much.

You ought to be able to buy .32 cal. lubed cushion wads from Dixie or Track or someone similar. They would compress to .300 easy enough. I use them in my .36 revolver, work great... [hmm]

Had to shoot from 15 feet, that is the shortest distance at Ben Avery Range. Interesting side note, you can see small holes from # 8 shot on the target. Using the same derringer from the same distance, (Bond Derringer, .45 / .410) I shot at a target 18 inches to the right. There were more shot holes in this target than the one I shot at! That means at least a 3 ft. pattern at 15 feet...

ok.......... next trip to shooters (in a couple of weeks) I've gotta get some shot!  I don't feel quite so bad about my one bullet hole now!  I really don't do too badly for being a gurl!    sure wish you could happen upon another place where you can shoot from 10 feet rev.

How about the "Abe Lincoln" Memorial Derringer shoot ? Line up some rocking chairs fitted up with a head shaped target (Beard optional) and blaze away. Extra points for jumping from the theater box to the stage. Ever wonder why actors are told, "Break a leg"???? Just ask JW Booth. ("Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play.........")  [conf]
