I dont know if this is the right place for this but here goes
I have about 25 sq ft of premium red oak hardwood flooring and want to make a box similar to a foot locker for camp storage or tent storage when not camping. Any ideas or pictures will be appreciated
Jerry, I found some great patterns by doing a google searcg for blanket chests
Jerry, the oak will make a beautiful camp box. However it will be heavy as an anvil. I have an oak camp box that is very sturdy, but heavy! I reccamend using some nice pine 1x12 instead. Make them simple and easy to carry and pack. Just make what is called a 6 board box.
4-1x12x24
2-1x12x10Ã,¼
20-1Ã,½" drywall screws
1-Ã,¼x12" dowel rod to cover screws
2- small hinges or use heavy leather for hinges.
thats all you need. if you make your camp boxes the same size they pack up much easier into yout truck bed or camp trailer. Hope this helps, Jerry.
You got any pics?
I have realized the Oak is going to be heavy I'm going to make a 16x16x24 from it and line it with styrofoam for a cooler
Probably going to plane the boards to 1/2" to cut down on weight
What kind of rope will be more correct for handles?
Got a new pine one delivered a few weeks ago... made bya friend. It is heavy witt nuttin in it ... will take a pic n post Jerry.

Found a Boy Scout plan for a camp box....some other good stuff on there as well.
Well I am about 80% finished with my first box it is apprx. 14" x 16" x 24" I planed the Oak to 1/2" to cut the weight. Now that its almost finished it looks more like a shipping crate than anything else
I'm thinking of using leather for the hinges how will I attach this leather
straight blade screws run em thru hammered up pennies then inta the leather.
sorta lika por mans finish washer Jerry
Here is what it looks like Rude and Crude
still have to put on hinges and hasps all of leather and am looking for a clear pic of an 1800's shipping company logo to stencil on the box before I oil it down

LOOKS GOOD Jerry
That really looks good, Jerry. Ummm, what's it weigh?
287 lbs
(http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n121/laffingman67/rotf-1.gif) Yep! but its sooper dooper tuff!
It weighs about 20 pounds Its not as big as it looks
I need some 1800's type markings to put on it
I'd put "Team Lift" on it.
;D
Jerry, If you want to call it a cartridge box here's site you might want to look at. Has some neat handle on the boxes also.

Ole Terry built this for me ... for use in my base camp... he meant for it to be carried one time it is huge heavy n built strong ...
all white pine ... needs a coat of oil yet .
Here it is all oiled up with leather hinges and closing straps
I have to add carry handles and I'll be finished maybe, I may put in some styrofoam insulation and use it as a cooler an idea I got from Tom H
I am also going to bogus up a Bullard & Son's Traders logo and stencil on it

WOW! that turned out very nice!
Nice job, I like making things to go with my gear. Bullfrog
real nice! one idea I might suggest is to put a drainage plug in the side/bottom of the cooler. I have a box cooler just like that and it is waaaay heavy when the ice melts and gets full of water. having a drain plug would be better than dumping it over (which is what I have to do), the water tends to roll down the side of the styrofoam and get trapped between it and the wood, which will eventually cause it to rot I'm guessing.
very nice work.
my x-husband made one about 3 times that size for the tent, blankets, etc. it was really pretty - made it out of oak! of course I couldn't lift it, with or without him. we gave it away to someone who keeps blankets in it (at home). ;D

The trick is to use 1/4 or 3/8 plywood n frame the edges. WINK
Zan
The bottom isn't water tight so as the ice melts it will drain itself, Tom H's idea
jerry you amaze me .with your skills.
For sum reason I don't think Jerry knows just how good he is ...
lol
Well, then quit tellin him! He'll get a big head on his shoulders! lol
Sheesh, Aug 11 you are "thinking about" and by the 13th you have a box done!
What kind of vitamins are you taking? I wish I had that much drive!
Fantastic.
Jerry's got more drive than a teenager with his first car. lol. He don't waste no time, Thats for sure. He decided he wants to go renedevousin and by gum he's goin redevousin
Jerry, I just won a nice box at a shoot this weekend. I will take a picture of it this coming weekend and post the pictures for you. I had to leave it at camp because I was out of room in the truck for the ride home, and it was raining. The lid has a mountain scene wood burned into it. Wait till you see it, you won't believe it made it to the tenth pick of the blanket.
It looks like I'm going to have to make another one. I had plans to line this one with styrofoam and use it as a cooler
The next one will be made of pine salvaged from an old barn
