Kinda new to the area,I'm in Escanaba,Mi near north east Wisconsin, Mariennette is near me, how close is it to you guy's
Not to familiar with Wisconsin. I am in Northeastern Minnesota about 100 mile drive from Superior Wisc.
Voy
Escinaba is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from wear Im at
Voy, I think it's like a five hour trip for me to Escanaba. (One of my friends is from Escanaba and her mom still lives there.) I'm an hour and fifteen minutes from Duluth.
we are about 5 hours from mouse and about 2hour from foxriver.
I am about 2 hours from Duluth/Superior. Look at the map and Duluth is right at the dogs snout of Lake Superior--Draw a line due north from Duluth to the Canadian Border, and ya will find Ely. Thats where I call home.
Voy
Voy, I been there, had to go up to the Tackinite (sp?), mine ta take an old transformer and it's PCB oil down to Ala.
Ain't that also the home of Bob Dylan? an possiabaly Prince? hdslp
Hankaye,
There were/are several taconite mines mines in the area and the nearest one is in Babbitt about 17 miles from here. As for Dylan, he is from Hibbing which is about a 70 mile drive for me. He went to school with my aunt Gail, and she said even in highschool he was a strange one. As for that other one--he was from the Minneapolis/St Paul area and is still not very well liked there due to his attitude. Judy Garland--Dorothy from the wizard of Oz is from Grand rapids which is about an hour the other side of Hibbing. Ely's claim to fame as to famous people is being the birthplace of an actress named Jessica Beale or some such spelling for the last name. We also had people like Sigurd Olson of "tree hugger from hell" fame living here, Paul Harvey and Charles Kuralt spent vacations here and Kuralt bought the local radio station which was sold after he died. Dorothy Molter- a woman who lived in the very remote Knife lake area near here was famed for being the last person to be living in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and lived off money she got as donations for her home made root beer (which she couldnt legally sell which is why she got dontions--She was a very interesting lady to know). Joe Seliga- a world famous wood and canvas canoe builder lived here as did another famous tree hugger and author-- Bob Cary. Then we have Will Steger and Paul Shurke the explorers who in the 1980's took a party and dog teams to the north pole. Lynn Rogers the bear expert who is not very well liked by the locals. The list goes on, but from there it only gets even worse.

Voy yer living in the land of cleberaties. When I was there Jessie Ventura was the Gov. Spotted one local with a Tee-shirt that read
"My Governer can whip your Governers ass!"
Laughed mine off. and since when is a cheeseburger with Lettus, Tomato an onion "California style"?? ROFL ROFL
Hankaye,
Yeah, I hear ya there. Jesse was actually a good governor. We do have plenty of celebs here and some of them we wish would just go away. We lucked out and 1 of the most disliked ones (Richard Dean Anderson--AKA McGyver) did stop coming up very often, and another (Farrah) died.

Know any Kettlewells? Got a place outside of Pine River,WI. My target backstop is buried under snow right now but I can work something up when the weather turns a bit nicer. I try do do some shooting every month with my Hawken and my Remington Rolling Block conversion. There's a few other of my Hoffmaster buds that want to get together also. We'll see if we can get something going. Got my web page at http://home.rr.com/Elkinde. I'll check back for a reply. Bang - Boom!
why your right in my back yard.
name doesnt ring a bell. to no any Hansens
Eric, who's sat on the stool next to you at the Hilltop Saloon.
??? &)
never been to the hill top, but I know were it is.
I live in Berlin, parents and grandparents live in Pine River area.
ya do any rondevos
nice T/C, I got the traditions hawkens,
Sorry, Eric told me an acquaintance of his did some black powder shooting and he had met him at the Hilltop. This would have been an excellant weekend to do some shootin but I've got a funeral Sat. afternoon; a Xmas party Sat. evening and the Viking - Dallas game is Sun. at noon. The wife has inventory Sat. morning and seeing as she is very good at not causing a fuss about all my hunting I have to set aside time with her. Hopefully we'll encounter more friendly weather this winter. March is usually a sure thing for a weekend or two of outdoor activity so we got that to look forward to. I'm heading up to the cottage today but I'm sure Mamma's going to want to go out to eat tonight.
Maybe we can get together yet. My Hawken is a Traditions also. 50cal. 1:66 twist percussion. Been shootin 90gr. Pyro. with T/C maxi Hunters and been getting good groups at 100yrds. Round balls I reserve for 50yrd. shootin with 50gr. goex or pyrodex. Got 4 doe with the Hawken and one buck with my other front stuffer. I'd rather use tradtional than modern firearms and bow hunting trumps it all. Good shootin!
All you people talking about the fine area up there in Wisconsin are bring back some fond memories... I grew up in Neenah, and my Grandparents had a place on the Pine River just outside of Poysippi (SP) right across the river from Buck Owens Ranch. Was not into front stuffers then but remember fine times up there! And my Great Uncle had a farm just outside of Gleason where I got my first buck....
This Eric, was he a cop at one time (Eric Nygard) hes a good friend of mine. we have worked together for going on ten years.
I hope to get together, gets kinda old fartin around by yer self all the time.
Jim, when the heck you coming back this way
When I make some money for a trip back and have the time to go on vacation.... short answer - not very soon....
I am in North Fond du Lac.Family has a small farm,40 acres ,in the Town of Greenbush in the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest area. That is where I do most of my soot burning.Want to try the Van Dyne Sportsman club but just can" t seem to get there.
sounds too upidee for me cuch ROFL
Been to Van Dyne a couple times. Nice facility - sheltered benches - spotting scopes - helpers - beer and soda bar - kitchen ( yes!!!) love to eat.
Don't know what they charge to shoot outside of deer hunting sightin in. I imagine it can be a "clicky" place. I'm not into that either. Going to Otter St. fisheree today. See ya there!!!!!!!
I am hoping it is not a clicky boys club, but closer to a goodo'l boy club.To be honest. Any time I see more shotgun activities than all others combined. It gives me an uncomfortable feelin. It probably has to do with most trap and skeet shooters I know seeming to look down on some one who can't afford a fancy gun.
Damn Tootin young fella. I'm the sunshine behind your back.
Nuf sed ther...Im pickin up wut yer layin doun
Id like ta go there with my dads old H&R 20ga. n see em try ta bust em as gud as that ol thing do ROFL
I'd be embarrassed to bring any of me shot shooters to a club. My brother - in - law makes me shoot with him time and again just to get some laughs. Do shoot best with the O/U.
I'm in Northern Wisconsin (a couple of hours from Superior, only ta other way). It's actually great, since I'm close to the Apostle Islands, where the fur trade really started in this country. Find Ashland on the map and you'll see the center of my stomping grounds.
I'd love to meet up with a few of you some day for a bit of shooting and telling lies (I'm pretty good at both).
Dave
Dave,
Ashland really aint that far from where I live here in Ely Mn. We are working on getting a second rendezvous going up here for this year so we may be having one in August as well as the one in October. If your interested in either of them let me know.
Voy
A North Border States Rendezvous would be something. All the states on the border of Canada. Has that been done yet?
Elkinde,
Our rondie is right up here on the border. Ely is just a stones throw from the border an we aint got any real civilization between us and the border. We are lookin at doin 2 of em this year (1 in Aug and the other in Oct.) an the area is just as purty as ya can find anywhere. I live in town but within 10 minutes of leaving home I can be in some of the most pristine wilderness ya can find in the country.
Voy
Got a map here of where I'll be shootin this afternoon if your interested. You said you are familiar with my area! The red plot with the x is where I'm at. I'm 200 yrds S. of Little Silver Creek.
Wish I could make it but that just aint in the cards for me right now. Too blasted many bills and not enough income for anything right now. Make my truck payment and insurance, then decide ifns I put gas in the tank or food on the table or what I am gonna pay on with whats left. Besides having to keep the fire goin in the stove cuz all I heat with is wood and I dont want the house ta freeze up. Last time I was in Ashland was bout 8 or 9 years ago and we encountered a spring blizzard on our way there from the Mich. U.P. an got to Ashland with a bus we had bought out on the east coast in time to see them using large front end loaders to clear the highway. Stopped at the casino for breakfast and WallyWorld to get a set of spark plugs for it and then went to a gas station farther along through town headed toward the Duluth area and watched a greyhound sized bus slide across the parking lot at the gas station and over the curb stop between the gas station and either a McDonalds or Burger King. Talk about the possibility of a new drive through window. That one was close.

My cousin has a property up there and if I ever go up I'll have to keep in mind a fellow SmokePoler is in the area.
Sorry I missed ya, was gone all weekend.
My grandparents farm, and my parents property is the in the block just north of the one you showed.
Elkinde,
Wheres the property at up this way?

The spot I use for shooting is in Waushara Co. WI.(Central WI.). Also happens to be the place I've been deer hunting the last several years. Almost got stuck coming out where the snow plow banked up our driveway entrance. If you look down the road you can tell where the driveways are; look for the highest banks. The plows somehow manage to bank it up in those spots. Oh well! Winter's almost over. Won't need the 4X4 to get in the hunting land soon.
Same thing happens with my sidewalk. Dont know how but the city always manages to get more snow in my walk entry than anywhere else along the front yard. At least they havent put it right up to my front door like they did last year. Still tryin to figure out how they did that. I know my house is close to the street, but how did they manage to get most of the snow concentrated in a patch 15 feet wide and 12 feet in from the street right where my front door is? I had to go out the back door and crawl over the snow to get my shovel out to even dig out my front door and walkway because the snow wouldnt let me open the front door at all.

We have 2 rondy's coming up this year here in the Ely area. The first one is set for Aug. 13-15 and the other is set for the first full weekend in Oct. You interested?
Voy
How strict are they with PC
We are more lenient than many. We like tipi's, and aren't going to kick ya out for having enamelware or modern eye glasses and just ask that ya do your best to be in period clothing etc. We do ask that participants do demonstrate something while they are here as we are an educational org. We also do ask our traders to be handcraft traders and not national traders who buy all their goods from a store/importer. If there is something in specific you have questions about just fire away.
Voy
skunkkiller,
I actually just found the web page for your rondy yesterday, and have made arrangements to drive up from Chicago that Saturday. Looks like about a 2 hour drive for me. Since I don't have much in the way of clothing or gear yet, I thought I would take advantage of your public days, maybe check out some traders, and maybe get some ideas, do a little window shopping for the basics. The ultimate goal is to attend that midwest primitive event on the U.P. at the end of July beginning of August, it looks like a heck of a lot of fun, and I'd like to camp there, but I think I need to get my kit together first.
Speaking of basics, if all of you experienced fellas had known then what you know now, and were gonna do your first one camping all over again, what would you have taken with you? Bear in mind I don't have a rifle yet, and I wanna shop for awhile before I get one, if you were to camp again for that first time, what would you take? I figure a simple wedge tent, maybe some wool blankets, I have a capote, 2 long pull over shirts, some drop front trousers that I need to figure out how to get buttons on 'shok' and I figure I can make some basic moccasins, I have belt, and I figure some non perishable food, I found a neat squirrel cooker on ebay, flint and steel, belt pouch, and I think I need a good corn boiler, a knife... any ideas?
My first one, I had my clothes, a couple wool blankets, knife, sash, tin cup an plate, old spoon n fork, kentucky rifle and a tarp to make into a la'vous. Most of the guys in our group do what we can to help out our new members if they are short on gear. We work with the newbies so they can get off to a good start and not be ridiculed or intimidated by the thread counters at other events. Unlike some of the other vous we know that not everyone can afford to just go out and buy all the PC items for their camp, and we encourage them to stick with it and to add to their gear as they can. We do have restrictions but they are not real bad. And with a camp fee of $20 which includes at least 1 meal and the firewood for your camp, it aint a bad deal. And for the guys who are lookin to do trading, we got a great deal for them to. Ely has about 3000 residents but in the summer we have most of our 700,000+ tourists coming through so they should do real well on sales.
