There are nearly as many methods of browning as there are people doing it.  My method of choice is Birchwood Casey's Plum Brown.  Follow the instructions and you'll have good results.   My experience is that getting an even brown on something the size of a barrel takes three to five applications.  Do each one as if it were the first and you'll be pleased, take shortcuts and you will not.

That plum brown gives good blueing too.  Just place piece in boiling water to blacken between applications, pretty durable blue.

I just browned a double shotgun with Laurel Mountain browning solution.  I could not use plum brown because of the solder on the rib and barrels of a SXS shotgun.  It took about 10 coats to get it like I wanted it but I am very pleased overall.  Just follow the directions and wait the time specified.

What does that mean???  Follow directions?? Is that what the extra piece of paper in the package was?? Directions are read only when all else fails.
