Title: 8 Bore Boxlock
Post by: CowboyCS on May 07, 2009
I just finished this one, and have it boxed up and ready to ship to it's new owner.
This is an 8 bore (.835) built on a Pete Allen boxlock action, they are representative of the Edwin Wesson actions of the 1860's. The rifle has a finished weight of just under 11 pounds. The load data is written on the sight in target. The stock is Rock Maple that has been stained and then oil finished, the metal is rust blued.

If you would like to read about the build, it is documented in the current projects section of my website at: http://www.freewebs.com/stolzergunsmithing/apps/blog/ (http://www.freewebs.com/stolzergunsmithing/apps/blog/).

Enjoy

Just a few close-ups of the wood.

Beautiful work!  What kind of charge is needed to expel an 8 bore ball out of the barrel?

Thank you.
250 grains FFg is what I worked up, but that is actually a light charge for an 8 Bore. All of the load data is written on the sight in target. Feel free to ask any questions though, I'll try to answer them.

Yep, should have paid more attnetion to the target, but the rifle is so gorgeous it distracted me momentarily.  I really like how the lines on the stock are so crisp and well defined without giving them a sharp appearance, and the checkering equally precise without looking like a blanket.

With an eight bore projectile and a "light" 250 grain charge of powder does the balls large diameter mitigate the recoil somewhat?  That much powder must make a tremendous cloud of smoke!

Thank you again, the lines of the gun follow the British gunmaker style. Just my opinion but when it comes to Classic Big Bore Hunting Rifles the British and the Germans had it all figured out a couple hundred years ago, everybody else is just playing catch-up after that. Actually if you look at most of the classic American rifles, ignoring the ornamentation and just look at the basic architecture of the rifle they all have the same basic structure as the British or German Style. The Checkering is probably some of the finest I have done yet, it's 20 LPI FlatTop, single cut edge(sometimes called borderless).
Cast in pure lead the balls weigh about 785 grains +/-. What mostly tames the recoil is that it weighs 11 pounds, and the cast-off of the stock, for as large of a caliber as it is, and the tremendous amount of power it has, the felt recoil is comparable to my .458 WinMag Model70. The difference is the 8 is more of a hard shove were as the .458 is a very sharp kick.
It does produce a pretty good cloud of smoke.

I like it even more now with the details you've given.  I also like the rugged style of the box lock; solid, funtional and tastefully engraved.  Thanks much for this posting.
