Title: A vote!
Post by: Dryball on April 18, 2009, 05:08:05 PM
Shall we continue these photos of what not to do...or shall we end it now? All I need is a vote of "continue" or "stop"

i say continue. But in saying that there is a big difference in constructive criticism and poking fun, as long as its not insulting i say go for it but people its hard tell tone of a comment when its typed.

On another note...might get more responses from a poll.

Do you mean as in.... "what's wrong with this photo".... thing ??

If so, I vote for continuing...
I know absolutely 'squat'  of what is correct or not..
I enjoy them...it's a "valuable learning experience" for me...(How's that for PC verbage?  :-& )

i say continue, i don't know squat about being period correct dress, but at least i might get to spot a timex every so often... maybe even a work boot...

now, what weapon was used and if it is period correct, different story.

saw a western on tv yesterday, Audie Murphy playing Jesie James, riding with Quantrill, during the civil war, one guy had a 1875 remington, (yes the funny trimed web) and all shot SAA 1873 or later, and trap door springfields.

not one front stuffer, no cap & Ball , and no henry's

I know its hollyweird, but come on...

Stop it as it's currently being used and find a different way to achieve the same end.

This whole discussion has revealed and eye-opening aspect to me...I do think it is wrong to use photos of real people, as a target for discussion on the wide open Internet.

There has to be other ways to approach this and still devise a learning vehicle, but IMO, not with a real, unsuspecting individual as the centerpiece.

maybe members should submit their own photos, thus giving there own consent and it will then help them change their own persona.

i agreew with round ball, and 2506, self submitted photos, or submitted with permission, i know i would be very upset if i was checking out a new website and found MY photo there of what i thought was my best persona, and it was being picked apart.

Kinda like finding your daughter on the cover of an adult magazine...

Stop.... Don't use photos of real people unless they know what's going to be done with the photo and give you written consent.  You can download photo release forms on line.  I think you might have opened yourself up for trouble by posting a photo of a real person unless you had permission from that person.  I think it would be wise to delete the whole thread.   My 2ยข

Okay then...do we have any volunteers? Is anyone willing to have there photo up here to be checked for mistakes and what needs to be done to they're outfit to improve it?

" kinda like finding a picture of your daughter on the cover of an adult magazine".  Never looked at it like that but he has a point.  I would hate to stumble across a picture of myself on the internet in a topic "What is wrong with this picture".  Would be even worse if I truly believed I was period correct and was mistaken or misinformed.  Not against this topic just maybe should not use real pictures of people without their consent.  A lot of good points brought up here, we should use them to find a way to continue without creating a liability.

i can't criticize much, my period dress is at this time, a pair of plain cloth brown pants, a flanel shirt, a home made shooting bag made from a carpet baggers cloth, a hand knotted leather laced strap for the bag.

i always shot from a flask since i started with revolvers, so i am familiar with that, and it is in the bag, so no horn.

I do have the card woven strap i won in the last give away, i could use as a belt, since i don't use a horn to hang from it. and the strap is too nice to hang my bag from it...

So i look at the pictures and read your more experienced comments, to learn what i CAN use to improve my appearance, (other than losing weight)

My persona??
I came from the future, some poor soul saw me appear, died from a heart attack, i took his gun and bag, he was a lot skinnier & shorter than me, so nothing of his fit....

If you are going to continue doing this, with the person's consent, you might want to just do one person at a time.  You also might want to have the person that you are working on let you know what era he would like to portray.  However the person might be like me, not really know what I'm supposed to look like.  Just want to look acceptable at a Rondy or other function.

I vote yes to continue, but have to agree with everyone about the liability...

I will volunteer my picture as soon as i kin get a basic outfit together and go from there.. As others have said I am still learning and do find this thread educational.

I will also contribute a vote to Use members photos ; or even documented drawings or paintings, if they wish, but would also like to add don't blow them out of the water with remarks about using modern reproduction firearms of any kind.
I have been extremely lucky in being able build my own, close to, 100% correct firearm for my persona in 1820
Please add who you are and the time period. Not all of us are rocky mountain fur trappers
My persona has a long and storied past that originated in Holland in 1765 and is now in North Mississippi in 1820 and is a tired old man of 55 now.

DB,
Howd ya do that? I think it'd be good as the pic for my profile. Thanks.
As for the knife sheath, I just didnt get it moved before the pic was taken. yeah it can cause a bit a discomfort if it dont git moved, or if somethin aint moved ta da other leg.
As for the other items in the pic, with the exception of the rifle, almost all items were made by me, including items in the background, and the pipe (which is made of sacred Basswood Lake Pipestone, which is blackish green rather than red). I have since learned how to make other nicer things and have been using them more often, but go with the old standbys from time to time.

if the catogory is to help members with their persona-all well and good, if it is just to show off your keen eyesight then?? There are those of us or at least me that really need help to define who and how to present ourselves in correct manner.  We make the best of what we can and work to improve,( money talks) and you do not acquire the PROPER period correct overnight, don't care how creative you are and repeated (BS walks old saying) nit-pickin  does nothing but dampen at least my desire to go out and meet new friend and have fun. So guess this is a no count vote.
Title: Re: A vote!
Post by: voyageur1688 on October 17, 2009, 08:18:29 PM
  Bulldog Lady,
No ill intent was meant with this. I know that being all period correct does not come fast or easy. I have a long way to go myself, and know there are many things I still need to work on. As for money, I also know it is not cheap to do this, and believe me, more of my gear is either home made, scrounged or swapped for--as I am pretty well broke most of the time, and the rest of the time I am totally broke and am scrambling to get the money to pay my bills and put food on the table, and sometimes I have to choose between the 2. Things are slowing down for me for work here real soon and I need to save every pennie I can for winter and hope I can make it at least half way through on it--but its not looking good for me this year.
However on the part of keen eyesight, sometimes you can look closely at a picture and find things that need improving or you may find something that you like and would like to add to your gear. To everyone, I say, If there is something in my pic that needs work, please let me know.

Di
To be strictly correct is a learning experience and can dive you up a flipping wall. Here is the answer I gave another person.

You want to know or to let some know was an item available in a cretin time period, but was it also available in a cretin geographical location?
To be strictly correct, this has to be considered. The problem with that is we are finding that just because some thing is not mentioned in documentations or showed in early painting, dose not mean that is was not there.
So if a person asks was item X available. We should say yes/no, If yes then we should tell them if it was available or not in a cretin geographical location according to the documentations we have available.
