Title: Finally a place to shoot!
Post by: n5lyc on March 29, 2009, 02:46:04 AM
I have been looking for a place to shoot near where i moved to in northern MS.

I finally found it this weekend. Only 8 miles from the house, covered firing lines, shooting benches, targets out to 120 yds, separate lines for pistol, also archery.

You don't have to join the club if you don't want to, but membership cost only $100 per year. You get a key to the range, and useage anytime you want.

and they even hold a monthly muzzle loader tournament, that does not conflict with the other tournament i shoot.

Got to REALLY sight in my hawken for the first time since i got it 2 months ago.

From a rest, with 60 gr of 3f, shoots a nice tight group (10 shots in about 2 1\2 inches all touching), about 6 inches high of point of aim at 50 yds.

bump up to 70 gr. 3f, same prb, it throws a pattern (10 shots in an area about size of your open hand) about 8 inches directly left of point of aim.

Went back to 60gr, and dropped the rear sight some.

Dead on at 25 yds, about 4 inches high at 50, and didn't get to sight in past that yet, but hit a bowling pin at 75 yds offhand.
Jerry, wanna come next saturday?

I have to appreciate my club even more. $100 a year is reasonable. Mine cost $40. a year with about the same priveledges including fishing and archery.

from New Albany, turn east on old hwy 78, go until you reach Greg Richies Body Shop, turn right on CR 122, 122 is right before the body shop. it is about 200 yds down on the left.

Hey jerry, I think i squeezed by you by 1 point in 1 match, and by i think less than 5 in the other, so you are nipping at my heels.

and i don't see how, i just got my rifle sighted in this last saturday, so in the last 2 matches it was just luck,

in the woods walk i had a good string of misses going then i got lucky and hit a few at the end..

AND you beat me in the firestarting event... (by .03 seconds)
and i think you beat me in the hawk event.

and you are still 1 whole shoot ahead of me (January's Freeze match) so i got some catching up to do...

Ian

I may be able to do that.
I gotta find some powder and caps before then.
will probably shoot the ones i have left next weekend working on loads.

the 60 gr. group size at 50 yds will hard to beat.
if i can't get that or better, i will just shot 60 and hold high at 100.

sucks living in a small town where the local sporting goods store doesn't sell caps OR powder...

Well, we had the local shoot this weekend, not all traditional, but NONE of those unmentionable straight front loaders were used.

the course of fire was different, 3 shots with a bow at 20 yds, (if you didn't have one you could borrow)

We had one shooter who didn't have a muzzle loader and didn't want to borrow one, so he shot a bow for all the events.

you had 3 shots to knock over 2 bowling pins at 25 yds, (the bow shooter shot an outline of a bowling pin tacked to his bag back stop)

then you shot 3 shots on paper with a 2 inch bull at 25 yds.

then you had the same pins and paper at 50 yds, (the bow shooter hit a dead bulls eye at 50 yds)

then we repeated the same 25 & 50 yds again, but you could use ANY GUN you brought.(
1 guy shot 45-70 with iron sights, another shot a 38-55 the rest shot traditional (and the bow guy again)

i finished 4th, out of 8,  guess that makes me average. but we had some fun.

OH THE BOW SHOOTER FINISHED 3rd

NOW Black powder or Pyrodex is getting hard to find here in north mississippi, called 7 different sporting goods stores, 3 local & 2 major chains (1 Dicks and 3 wally world stores) NOONE has loose powder, just pellets, and #11's forget it. just 209 thingys.

but luckly, found out that a local CO-OP Scruggs has both. gotta visit before next weekend I onlu have enough left for 6 shots..

I don't know if it is o.k. to post this here, but i can remove it if it offends some,

I repaired a computer for a guy he paid me some cash, and he gave me a marlin model 60, said it jams every so often, but maybe i could do something with it,
I cleaned it within an inch of its life, and took it out to the range after the match, sighted it in, and grouped Really good at 25 yds, and after moving the target to 100 yds, wow, with iron sights...

I think this thing may get a scope, and see if i can trade it off for a muzzle loader..

25 yds

but for a FREE rifle.. i can't complain
