Title: 1800's Indian Skirt/Shirt
Post by: RoaringBull on July 24, 2008
Wife and I are getting things together for our first rondy in Oct.  She is of Native American descent and wants to portray such.  Since my persona will be something of an old river-rat from northeast Louisiana, the tribe in that area at the time is the Caddo Indians.

We know that they were farmers and peacable folks and that they grew and wove cotton.  What we are looking for is an example of women's clothing from the time after the first Europeans arrived, mid 17th century.

Our time frame will be 1820-1830's.

RB.... You might take a look at this site.  There used to be a Caddo Mounds State Park just west of Alto, Texas.  The Texas Historic Commision has it now.   http://www.thc.state.tx.us/hsites/hs_caddo_mounds.shtml

A man's shirt with a wool wrap skirt and leggings would fit for this. The skirts were a length of wool wrapped at the waist, belted and the top of the wool turn down over the belt. It should be about mid calf in length and the leggings should come just over the knee with leg ties to hold them up. Navy or red would be safe colors. I trying to be generic.
To be more correct, research the particular Indian group she wants to portray for styles, colors, etc. I am sure there are more choices once you narrow the research.
