Hey everyone! I'm willing to bet that almost all of you have at least one rifle.......so let's see your favorite....not necessarily the purdyest, but the one that gets the most use. Flint, percussion, wheellock...makes no difference. I'll start with my most used first: This is the Traditions Tennesee, .50 caliber, 24 inch barrel, flintlock. The reason she gets most used is because she's nice and light to carry, accurate, fast handling, and smells so good when shot!

Everything on the rifle is a copy of John's work.

Hey Little Jim, who made your gun. I saw one carved like that online today and wondered if it was by the same guy.

Hi Heather. His name is Al Edge of Ruther Glen Va. Aside from custom guns(what he prefers), he does repairs and restorations. He doesn't get to shows anymore, as his wife, Judy is wheelchair bound with M.S.. Absolutely wonderful folks, in every respect.

Well, he did a wonderful job.
Well until I get my 40 finished it will have to be my 54 'Ginnie' that Roy built for me . Ginnie is a 54cal. Virginia styled after Heschal Houses "School" with a Colerain swamped 42" barrel with round bottem rifling . Stock is from a blank of maple I have had since mid 80's and she sports iron furniture and double stage double set trikers. Ginnie is on the red blanket.
If not for her it would have to be 'Mel' ! I built 'Mel' from a blank out of same bunch I bought that 'Ginnie' is made from. 'Mel' has a Montana Rifle Barrel tapered 42" 50 cal in his channel. All brass furniture and a plain single triker . I fashioned him after a rifle made by a Lancaster smith named Melchoir Fordney from pictures I found in a book by Merrill Lindsey .

I think I've probably posted a photo of this rifle a time or two. ;D This is my go to rifle when deer hunting. For a low dollar rifle it's very accurate, with patched ball or conical.

What charge would you normally use?
Ned
This one is getting the most use as I slowly learn what it likes.
Neat musket...how's she kick?
Ned
Well, haven't used the 700 plus grain minies yet. They're molded up and waiting (actually got the mold and an extra custom base plug in a swap about 15 years before the musket). The round ball is about 470 grains and she shoves you around a bit. Still working with finding out the best loads. Even though this thing is short and light it's still a military musket, thick where it counts and as graceful as a piece of gas pipe hung on a cedar post. It's not a small game rifle, and you can't expect it to shoot like a Dixie 50, but I want to do as far as can with it.
Stand up shootin with a hoe handle today, got 3x ball diameter groups at 40 paces. That was with a loose patch you could seat into the barrel with your thumb. Not barkin' squirrels yet but gettin there.
Hib that is a BEAUTY!

she's a sweet shooter!
Zan
Homer builds some fine rifles! Met him up at Friendship years ago. What weight is your colerain barrel?
have to admit my ignorance, but I'm not sure what you mean by "weight" of the barrel? length is 42 inches, takes .490 balls? total weight of rifle is around 7 to 9 pounds (I'm guessing). please elaborate on what you mean by "weight"
yes, it is a privilege to own one of his rifles.
zan
Weight is the diameter of the barrel at the breach. I've shot with Mr. Dangler at the Saulk Trail turkey and hog shoots. First class gentelman and a great human. Proud to know him!
A-B-C ....A being the lightest. Mines a C weight and weighs 9 lbs! From the weight of your rifle sounds like you have a B weight. Man. I just hate talking weight with a woman! ROFL Anyhoooow I'm thinking of building a new rifle but with a B weight barrel.I don't really know how to differentiate between them except by what Pathfinder said...break out the calipers! Or if I hefted it! But an A weight....pretty rare.(and real light!)
Or you could tear your rifle apart and there will be an A B or C stamped on the bottom flat by the breech!
MY Koster special .54cal mule ear 15lb.offhand target rifle the most accurate rifle I own.

Good lookin gun...and that rack is outstanding! thmbsup
Ned
Thanks. The rack was made from a cypress log that my grandfather fished out of the nearby river more than 30 years ago. I left the edges with the natural curve of the tree itself and mounted the spring tensioned holder with a levergun in mind but have found that my smokepole fits perfectly as well. About half the trunk was quartersawn, and I've made numerous things out of it including a coffe table along with some things turned on the lathe.
Not to take any thing away from the rifle, but I really love that gun rack!
Thanks for all the compliments.
The wood for the rack was the last piece of an entire tree, and reminds me of my late grandfather who passed away in 1985. I started using that wood for projects in 8th grade shop class. There were two retangular pieces that I used for mantles on my parent's as well as my uncle's fireplaces, and I've given away numerous other pieces to my friends for thier projects. Until; about 4 years ago this was the last piece, and I thought it would really go with my grandfathers old Winchester made in 1906 that his own father gave him and his brother in 1932. As you can see, it now hold my rifle quite well, and I'm glad I could share it with all of you.
That is a beautiful gun rack William. And if you could make and finish that you won't have any problem with any gun kit. thmbsup
I appreciate to encouragement and will post my results of course.
I would have to say this is my favorite rifle, .45 x 7/8" x 36" GMB, setting in a Dickert maple stock with a John Bailes Pecussion L&R lock - 1825 to 1880 period. I can also convert this one to the John Bailes L&R Flintlock - 1770 to 1810 period for an earlier rifle.
However, instead of converting it again I am just going to take the L&R Flintlock and build another "sister" rifle to this one since I have another .45 x 7/8" x 36" GMB setting around doing nothing.
As you can see, it's one heck of a pumkin getter.... hdslp chrrs

Tough choice!
Greetings Everyone:
I know the post says favorite rifle, but these are my favorite rifles. Hard to choose which one I like to shoot the most. The top one is a kit gun my father built for me when I was about 13, it also has a 36 caliber interchangable barrel. The second rifle was bought down the road at a yard sale for $40.00 and the Underhammer I just got after several decades of wanting one. For me it is hard to choose, oh and I left out my Bill Large Flintlock and my first Ky Rifle. Like I said, hard for me to choose I love Blackpowder Weapons. I have to many favorites and want to add more.
Love this site

40 bucks?!?!?? I think that's the deal of the decade! How do they shoot?
They all three shoot wonderful thmbsup. The top one has taken a few deer, and when I got the second one last fall I don't have a clue why I didn't take it hunting, its a real shooter. "Ole Yards Sale" will make steel sing at 100 yards. The Underhammer needs a better sight, but I can live with what its got for now.

Iron wood thats the best lookin CVA I ever seen!
Thanks txcookie. I really like the rifle. It has a 28" 1-48" barrel and shoots both patched balls and REAL bullets very well.
My favorite rifle is the one posted on my intro pic. It's a Tradition's Shenandoah .50 flint. My first rifle was a kit-built Hawken. It was a good shooter but weighed a ton. I've done some modification on the Shenandoah; stripped off the plastic finish, refinished it with Walnut Danish Oil, replaced the front sight. It's a great shooter for an "off the rack" gun.
My favorite all time rifle is the tried and true TC Hawken caplock in 50 cal. It was my first and I still shoot it very often
Here's a pic of my Shenandoah.

My favorite? Cant choose which ones my favorite. I love em all, from my wall hanger early CVA Hawken, CVA Kentucky I inherited when my brother died which he had built from a kit, Dikar Pennsylvania Rifle, Traditions Trapper flintlock, Numrich Swivel Breech, Jim Chambers Isaac Haines Kit I'm slowly working on, or my "Ole Mystery musket" (or is it a shotgun?)--Its an authentic flintlock from sometime back around 1800 and aint shootable but I love it just the same even though I have no idea what it actually is when it was made or who made it, or how it ended up in the rough condition it is in.
Just too hard ta choose. When I go hunting or target shooting at a vous, I take either the Trapper flintlock, Dikar Pennsylvania, or CVA Kentucky.
Voy
As with voyageur1688, I don't have one particular favorite. Whichever one I take out of the cabinet that day is my favorite. I've got a 36 cap CVA, a 45 flint kentucky style that I've been told by 3 different BP shop owners is an old Pedersoli w/a GM bbl ( I don't know or care. It fits right and shoots good.) a 50 flint kentucky style by Armsport, a 50flint PA pellet by CVA (loaded only w/loose black) and an old CVA flint 50 that I fixed so that I can also shoot it as a caplock . One of these days I'm going to start working on a 54 CVA big bore kit that I bought off of feebay a few years back My wife has a 32 deerslayer by traditions and a CVA 50 bobcat cap. Plus 1 pistol, 2 revolvers 1 dbl bbl caplock shotgun, and a 69 Charleville replica w/bayonet (now that's a longarm) that I haven' had time to try yet. How do you pick a favorite out of that melange? ???
Graybear the answer is Carefully...... chrrs
I only have one rifle and one pistol so I do not have any problem pickin which is my favorite.... Now to get some more money and git some more BP's is the challenge....
JamminJim; The trick to accumulating that number is an understanding wife who's is willing to buy some of them for you. my wife and I have wish lists that we give to each other for Christmas, birthdays, etc. I don't get a new gun every time but over 23 years , she has bought me my CVA squirrel rifle, a 45 cal. kentucky caplock kit, a .36 cal steel frame 1851 Navy replica, a .44 cal. steel frame fluted cylinder 1858 Remington replica, and a Pedersoli dbl. bbl. caplock 12 ga., some accoutrements and has agreed to most of my desired purchases. She buys new , the only new I bought new was the PA Pellet rifle. Oh yeah, and the Pedersoli 1874 Sharps. She said," You've wanted one for a long time, so get it." I think I've got a keeper. My no. 1 would have to be "Lucy J. Bullthrower" she is a 80's cva kentucky rifle kit, of all my funs I love her the most as she is the more constant in my hunting memories. The second rifle is a 70's flint kit that didnt have a name on the box but she shoots true and that lovely lady is named "Irene". Third in the line is Gracie becuase she is the nicest looking rifle I have she is Cva .50 along with the 2 over her, the rifle on bottom is a .36 caliber and we call her "Morticia" she is single handily responsible for a large depletion of the southern virginia squirrel population and on average holds more kills than all of the others combined, hence the morbid name. However with the recent addition of a great black lab I believe Morticia will also add a couple dozen Turkeys to her growing list of coup.

deer hunting> a lightweight TVM .45 Lancaster with 36" barrel.
small game/varmints/target>either a .40 Lancaster with 38" swamped barrel or a tiny .36 Southern Mountain rifle with 38" barrel. ALL are flint locks!
Pathfinder,
That is a good looking combination of your .40 cal smooyhbore and bag!
On your measure of 1 1/2 of mix shot, is that #5? What is your max range with shot on bushytails?
The mix is everything from 9-2's. Just guessing I'd say the longest shot was @ 45yd's when ya figure the distance from the tree to how far up that future meal was. She's still my go to gun. Not the prettiest girl at the dance, but does have the best personality.

Prolly this one, my Pedersoli Kentucky, gets used the most I think out of all of them. Suppose all are favorites on one day or the other, depends on what I'm hunting I think. Need to add as well that my wife and daughter presented me with this rifle upon my retirement from the El Paso Police Dept. in November of 2004. Great rifle.
My latest favorite. A Dixie Cub in .40 cal. made by Pedersoli. Been looking for a .40 for a long time....to say the least I'm on cloud 9.

Thanks Micanopy....she's my first .40 so very special to me.
DB
I can understand that. Many people think that a .40 is not a good caliber for much of anything. I differ on that opinion because I know that I killed many many deer and hogs with mine. I may one day build me another one. Mine was stolen when I went in the Marine Corps. Sure do miss that rifle.
My favorite rifle Is so because it has much sentimental value for Two reasons first and foremost it was given to me By my brother Micanopy I had built a rather large display unit out of maple so his family could display all their cool stuff such as clay pottery and Indian artifacts and the like . Upon finishing the install I see Micanopy with this rifle at first i was thinkin Cool.. He got a new one let me see . But before i could say that He walks over to me and says Even trade and gives me the rifle . Now i hadnt built this to get a thing i had done so out of my love for him and his family This jester brought a tear to my eye and it was all i could do to keep from lettin more than one or two escape ( gotta keep that macho image you know). This rifle will forever be with me as a cherished gift. Second reason is this is the rifle that i used to take my One and most likely only Buffalo with. This was a major hunt for me as i have Kiowa ancestry and the Buffalo is a sacred animal. I was honored to hunt her and to have Micanopy and my other family with me to watch. The rifle i speak of is a CVA .50 cal I have only hunted with it once . and have only shot it about 15 times and i like it alot. Here is a pic of the rifle.....

Yes He is indeed. He has helped me learn a lot about hunting and even myself I have been fortunate to have such a man to call my brother .
wow fellas ya'll have so many nice rifles! I would be jealous if I didn't have the prettiest one of all with my Lady of the Woods by Mr. Dangler. that said, there sure are some beauties out there and anything given by a brother is priceless.

I am truely humbled. That rifle has been in on the killing of two buffalo. I knew it would be placed in good hands.
If I had to choose one rifle it would be my poor boy in 54 cal.
It is the one I feel the most comfortable with.
Very reliable and accurate.

Good lookin rifle also. Say, noticed your water bottle....how is it made?
DB
Thanks DB.
I took a heavy duty bottle and just wrapped it in leather.
I found an article in M/L mag by T.C. Albert.
I wrapped the bottle in masking tape, cut the tape down the sides of the bottle and peeled the tape off as a pattern, layed it on a piece of leather and cut it out.
Then just sewed up the leather on the sides of the bottle.
Sounds so simple...but I know it's not. Thanks Tom.

Ya'll seen mine once er twice, but here he is again. My Buck Whacker, or Ol' Buck is my favorite so far even though I ain't shot it yet. I just love the feel of it in my hands. He's a .45 with a Large 44" barrel and an original (I believe from research) M.M. Maslin flintlock. Just a sweet rifle. I have a Mongrel built .36 coming with a Montana 42" barrel, made is the John Armstrong style, so we'll see which is my favorite then... dntn

Candlesnuffer's pumpkin popper is really nice to look at. I've always held that excellence lies in simplicity, pure elegance. The mostest from the leastest.

My only one I have had that I feel comfortable with, Hatfield?, .50, Davis triggers, not sure on the lock, stock refinish, rebrown and new trigger guard(not done yet) was done by me, Its a nice heavy piece for my 6ft5 frame and shoots beautifully(still wantin a Flint though, maybe someday).
This is my favorite small game rifle. My favorite used to be my Crockett until I got this one. It's a TVM Southern .36.
Here are all my favorites ( you love all your chillin', ya' know). And yes I know; there ain't no lock on the EV. I had been taken off for frizzen work.
is the second from the top a side hammer, they are all very nice chrrs
The second one from the top is the Early Virginia. The frizzen was a little beat up so I took the lock off to send away for frizzen replacement. It is my best off hand rifle. Though I'm a terrible off hand shot, I put 6 shots in a 2 & 1/4 inch group at 50 yards a couple weeks back. I'll try to post a bragging photo soon as I can get it made. I have other good 50 yard targets fired with that rifle. Just can't do as well consistently with any other rifle, even my favorite .45 deer Lancaster.
I have several favorites depending on what kind of shooting I am doing. I shoot mostly competition and plinking.
On those events where I have to shoot a percussion and shoots that require me to take 200 yard shots, I use my Santa Fe. It is the only rifle I have that I know where it shoots at 200 yards. It is the one on the bottom.
For small bore events I like Swee'Pea, a little .32 I built a couple of years ago. It has a 3/4" x 36" barrel that makes it almost as light as a .22.
For Big Bore events and sometimes for flintlock events I like my .58 flint Hawken I built about 3 years ago. It is a great shooter but is pretty heavy and will tire me out if I am shooting it all day.
For most flint events and all round shooting, I like my Tennessee. I built it about 25 years ago and has done well for all that time. It has a .50 7/8" x 42" GM barrel, L&R Manton lock and Davis triggers. I don't have a digital photo of this rifle.
I do have other rifles that I shoot a lot but these are my favorites.

these are my toys ! top ones my bess , the next one is emmylou , had her for about twenty years .40 cal. , then my austin halleck .50 cal ,a mowrey .5o cal, and my latest a .45 underhammer ,I got from rev ! love em all ,but emmylou is my favorite !
Here's what I shoot. TC renegade .54 cal.
I had a flintlock in the past, but it was the cheapest traditions rifle made. Plastic stock and all. Traded it for a CVA .50 cap lock. I had a heck of a time getting it to shoot well. Part of it was the gun I think, part of it was me not knowing what I was doing with load, ball size, patch choice. Part of it was probably the long time from flash to bang. I have since learned that there are many factors that go into the time from pan charge going off to main charge going off. If I had that rifle now I would do a little investigative work to see If I could improve the performance. When I watch impossible shots and see the shooting that he does with a flintlock, plus notice the lock time of his flintlock, I know that I have to get another one and try tray again. Saving the money and trying to learn a bit before I make the jump again. Planning on spending quite a bit more than last time. TVM and Pedersoli are at the top of my list right now, with thoughts of October country. Wife probably won't like the price of an OC gun though! Going to be at least a .54 since I want to hunt elk with a patched ball with it.
Favorite guns though, to be honest I will probably try shooting an elk with the TC next year and a deer with the '84 trapdoor.
here ya go voy ,hope this is some help ,dang thing wont let me post more than one pic ,so I`m doing a close up of the lock ,if`n you need other shots let me know !
Hey, Sharps! TVM will fix you right up with a fine .54 of your choosing. Their custom guns are scarcely more than an oc one. Good luck. hntr
Hanshi;
I look over TVM's web site most days. I've learned enough in my years to learn a bit more before I pick up my next one. I'm going to do the same thing as I did before I spent much money on my first custom longbow. I'm going to go where others are shooting what I want and shoot, listen and learn!
thats about the best way to go about it ! no disappointment that way !
Yep! The thrill of a "deal" wears thin as regret takes set!

TVM Late Lancaster 36"X.45, just over 6lbs. It has taken a truckload of deer and never needed a second shot. chrrs
Hanshi, It appears you and I have the same rifle made by Matt, only mine has a plain stock (no curl). Love the way this rifle shoots; 55gr 3F Goex, .440 cast ball, .018 ticking with pure Neatsfoot oil as a lube. When I can't find pure Neatsfoot I use GOJO hand cleaner, a little more fouling and dries out too much on the patches if out for too long.
I'll give it a try. Here are my Hawken Brothers in the house. The flintlock on the left was one I built from one of those kits that Cabela's had on sale right before Christmas. The perc Hawken on the right started life as a T/C .50 and was my dad's gun 30 years ago! He passed away in 2000 and last year I got out his Hawken. The sear was broken and it would not stay cocked; so I ordered a sear for it and fixed that. Then I replaced the old barrel with a fast twist Green Mountain. Then after shooting it a little I found the stock, which had gotten very dry, developed two parallel cracks just ahead of the tang. So I splurged for a piece of #4 grade maple and put a new stock on it. I've been having a good time working with both of these rifles. Have shot the flintlock and little and it shoots great. Haven't shot the T/C since I put the stock on it but it was shooting well before I broke the stock. Blessings, Rev

We both obviously know a fine rifle when we see one. Except for the nice wood - I only ordered the first grade up, P+ but the wood turned out to be much nicer than that - it's a plain rifle with a straight barrel. A rifle I'll never part with.
