Title: 75 range report
Post by: Pitchy on January 12, 2009, 09:15:00 PM
Got some balls from Frank so we geared up and headed to the cabin to shoot. Used a denium patched ball over 70 grains of FFF.
target was a 20 yards, twelve shots covering about an eight inch group. Not bad seeing my serpentine wasn`t working right so it was hard to hold and get a shot off. Very pleased all and all.

Thanks gents, yep a funday, cold about five above and a strong wind. That`s why we went to the cabin so we could shoot and not freeze. I think this thing will shoot pretty good after i get used to it.

Dang!  That's good shooting for a primitive firearm like that.  I wouldn't be afraid to take that one hog hunting!  One can usually get really close to hogs if they get the wind right.  Snoopy looks like he's right at home in that backpack!  :)

I don't doubt that at all Pitchy.... I'm sure you are going to have fun tinkering with that one.  I still like the idea of the shotgun slug.  I've killed a few deer and some hogs with slugs.  Makes a big hole.. :)  I have a 12 gauge rifled choke tube for a Remington if you can use it let me know.   I don't think I'll be shooting that ol' 870 any time soon.

Shot her some more today from a rest. The first six shots were 12 gauge rifled slus that i expanded out in the bump up die i made. They grouped the best. Don`t know why the patched RB arn`t grouping well.
Middle group is the slugs.
Target was at 20 yards from a rest.

Thanks RM, i`d like to tighten up the round ball groups.
I think i need to spin some sand paper in the bore to smooth it a little.

Ok, yesterdays patches were all burnt up indicating that patch ball combo was to loose. Used two patches and the group tightened right up.

Here`s a pic of the snow bank i`ve been shooting into, not one hole out the other side. Those balls will be all laying on the ground without a scratch on them. Of course ya want to make sure you have a good backstop anyway.

Well, we had a Polar Cubs event scheduled where the Boy Scouts were staffing a Cub Scout event. When it got down to predicted windchills of -35 they pulled the plug. This was supposed to be out on a lake for most of the events, so I think it is a good thing they canceled. Not only dangerous windchills, but it coulda turned them little Scouts off ta winter outings completely.

So I'm checkin the boards, then will go try to change oil in the jeep (if I can get it to flow...)

I'm thinkin you should be able to pick up them balls by the end o' June.
