Title: Alternate Keys
Post by: Ironwood on January 03, 2009
Ever wonder how some folks come up with those neat symbols like a little two ².  Or a degree sign °.  Of course there's the plus or minus sign ±.  And there's the always popular two cents worth ¢.  Here's a little chart that will show you how to type some of those symbols.  Hold down the Alternate (ALT) key while typing in the numbers on your numerical keyboard.

hmmmmm don't know Ned... You are holding down the Alt key while entering just the numbers on the "numerical keyboard".  Won't work with the keys on the upper part of your keyboard.

Ned, I just talked to my computer wizard (wife), and on laptops, there's a function button that you can press to lock the number pad. On mine, it's F9 (PadLock). On hers, it's numloock.
Also, I posted in the Central Meet board, and I guess I should have used the Mountain Area. Can you move it for me please.

Thanks

I don't know if anybody will read this, but, I thought it was interesting. I too have a laptop, (its a Dell, dude!) and I had a time finally getting it to happen.
First I have to hit shift and Num Lk, then I have to press the blue Fn at the same time I press the alt key (the blue numbers in my number lock keys on the regular key board will work then.) After I am done typing in the code, (like 0176 to get the degree symbol) when I let off the Alt and Fn it appears.
Sometimes I just hate those Fn keys :o

OK, then when you read my last sentence in my post just before you, DO NOT SAY "Fn" TOO FAST, if your wife hears that she might kick you...

Well, you an tell it is hot outside, I found an easier way to do all those cute little mind blowing symbols. If you have windows XP, go to the start button, programs, accessories, system tools, character map. Then follow the directions. I put the short cut in my lower tray and it works fast. No messin with those fn keys :mini-devil-28492: (don't say that too fast).
