Title: A Christmas Present
Post by: Oregon Horner on December 15, 2008, 03:42:50 AM
I'm not sure if this belongs here or over in Powder Horns.  Kinda fits in both.  My niece and her husband have muzzleloader rifle, a Traditions Hawken that had belonged to her dad when he was alive.  I decided that they needed a powder horn to go along with it and made this one for a Christmas Present.

The horn has a bit of myself, along with my family in it.  The spout plug is turned from branches from a smoke tree in our back yard.  The wolf is some of my daughters art work, transferred to the horn and engraved.  I plan to add a strap made from fabric that my wife wove on her loom.  And finally, the iron staple in the butt is hand forged from an old square nail that came from my Grandparent's house, to remind Ariel and John of the traditions we had during Christmas when Mom and Grandad were still with us.

I also wanted to scrim a saying on the horn that would relate to their rifle and to the fact that it came down to them.  I settled on the phrases "Traditions Pass From Generation To Generation/Powder Patch Ball/Aim Small Miss Small".  I also wanted to pass along a little of the knowledge I've learned about muzzleloading them.  Now that they'll have a horn, they shouldn't have an excuse to go shooting with me...

That is really awesome, Scott.  Great story and great horn. That will be another heirloom to pass down.
