Ive been using trappers mink oil from TOTW as patch lube for years. This fall a friend gave me some bear grease and I stuck it in the freezer. My hopes are to cook it down, strain it and try to use it as a patch lube. Anyone here ever use it.
I've never used it but there are quite a few who do use it and really like it. Just me but I don't see how it would be any improvement on mink oil. I may be wrong, usually am, but a poor bear must bite the dust first. Use it and let us know how you like it.

When I get around to using it I will let everyone know my thoughts. I will be surprised if it works any better than mink oil.
I found the TOW mink oil to be good stuff and preferred it for hunting. Other than that Hoppes BP Lube has been about as good as anything else I've used. Hoppes changes their lube as time goes by and has now two products, BP bore cleaner and their patch lube. I have some of both and both work well as patch lube. I find the field too crowded now with too many decisions. In the past if something worked then the choice is already made. Spit patch is the cheapest and works as well as most.
My nephew uses bear oil/bear grease. His rifle is a tack driver with it but I never have used it.
I have tried deer tallow and buffalo tallow before and find that they work but other things are more convenient.
If you are using it to hunt you need something stable like tallow, bore butter or?
If you are shooting for entertainment which includes plinking, rendesvous or club paper matches I use spit, hand lotion or moose juice.
Moose milk/moose juice has many variants, but what I use is:
water soluable cutting oil
Murphey"s oil soap
water
Use equal parts water soluable cutting oil and Murphey"s oil soap then add water as desired.
What I was originally taught was 1/1/30 but I use 1/1/4 as a better lube and it still works for cleaning.
For hunting I much preferred something like a grease or paste; something without water, IOW. Even Bore Butter would be okay in this situation. When I went out with my rifle loaded I wanted it to stay loaded if I happened to NOT shoot the rifle. Hoppes is a much superior patch lube but might contain water, I need to check. I know Hoppes is fine for at least a couple of days, maybe more. I'm just always leery of liquid lubes that could contain water. For reloads, all shooting really, I like Hoppes. But grease on that first patch takes any worries away if I have to keep the rifle loaded for any time period.
