Title: weather
Post by: Hanshi on March 14, 2023, 09:05:03 PM
Well, it's March 14th and we are in the middle of a blizzard.  White-out conditions from the "noreaster" but surely this will be the last serious storm of the season.

We're in the middle of 'Sprinter' here in Olde Virginny. Spring one day, winter the next. And some days it's winter in the morning, spring in the afternoon.

Well it did snow yesterday but today was sunny and above freezing.  So yesterday's snow melted nicely.

Even snowed last night!  It's really cold out but a degree or two above freezing.  But the day is sunny and sunny days melts snow regardless of temperature.  Still have lots of snow piled up where sunlight can't or barely gets to.  And as it frequently happens there's a cold, blistering and ferocious wind blowing.

I notice the echo here too.  Kinda like talking in an empty house.

Same old drought here. No measurable rain in more than 6 weeks.

Well, it snowed again last night.  Bad news is that we could get even more snow in April.  I'd like to think it's over for now, but....

There are breathtaking views, sites and "jungles" galore all around.  It is very difficult to go somewhere and there not be fascination and beauty.  So far Earth is the only planet we have and can thrive on; it behooves mankind to protect it.

The Drought Has Broken. We (wife & I) went to the tree farm last week. At the time my garden was only existing because I watered it every day. We have a lot of iron in our water and all the leaves were orange instead of green.

It rained about 2" up there so things were doing good with the spring/summer food plots. But it almost always rains in the panhandle in the spring.
We got back last Saturday and the garden was lush. The green beans went from nothing to picking size and the purple hulled peas were filled out. The okra was also getting ready as was the squash. Since we got back it's rained 4.5" and I'm cutting okra, picking peas and green beans and pollinating the squash.

Thank the Lord.  :applause:

It's still June and we've had rain nearly every day.  So far this June has already broken, stomped and mutilated all the records for June rain in more than a century.  I want to shoot a couple of postal matches but it's been so miserable day after day I've planned now for JULY!   wtch

Part of that extreme temperature warning in the South has been with us for almost a week. It's 98 deg. out right now and we saw 101 earlier in the week. Even though I live in Florida, temps seldom reach the high 90s due to the effect of the Atlantic ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other.
Florida is known as the "Sunshine State" but I wish it was the overcast state right now. The high temps also make it dangerous to shoot near maximum loads since the heat can push those loads to dangerous levels. Another side effect is the excessive heat softens and melts some of the lube concoctions.

I'd be happy to send you some of this Canadian 'overcast' we been living under all the way here in 'Olde Virginny' for weeks now. I been smelling smoke so long now I told the she-griz I wouldn't know if the house was afire til flames started ticklin' my toes.

If these clouds ever roll out and the Canadians don't smoke us out, they say we might see the northern lights here in Olde Virginny the next night or two.

Well so far summer has been a bust.  Except for a few sunny, warm days back in May and a couple in June it has been mostly overcast, drizzly, raining enough that I saw two frogs crossing the road choking and coughing because the rain was so heavy.  It has been mostly in the high 60s to low 70s with rain at least part of the day.  So this summer I've been wearing sweatshirts usually reserved for the winter.  Now in late August the rain continues.  I want balmy weather so the leaves on the deck will dry out and I can use the blower to finally blow them away.  We haven't been able to grill outside or even sit on the deck in the dusk due to chilly weather and wetness.  Inside the floors, stair railings, walls are gross and sticky.  Salt, baking powder, sugar and any granulated stuff is a clump thanks to the wetness and humidity.  Not just due to humidity a few days but thick, cold humidity week after week since June1st.

It has been hot enough 100+ here that I haven't been doing much bicycle riding but I shot with my club last weekend.
Only 3 of us shot and one of the guys started having problems with the 100+ heat so we stopped a little sooner than I would have preferred.

Saturday the 26th I will be shooting In Meeker Oklahoma. They are having a "Bug Shoot". (Paper targets of bugs.)

Talked with a dear friend a few days ago.  She's in Georgia and reported it was 97o while it barely made 70 (with rain of course) in Maine.  Today we're being blessed with more rain and dreary overcast.  I'm glad we're on a (very) high ridge above the Kennebec river valley.

It's very wet here after hurricane Idalia went by. All the windows are fogged all day and we're getting rain even after the storm which is unusual. In fact, everything about this storm is unusual. It moved from western Cuba to the Big Bend in a bit over a day and intensified from a tropical storm to a class 3 hurricane in less than 24 hours. It was still a class 2 storm when it entered Georgia and a class 1 nearing South Carolina.

It made landfall 30 miles east of my hunt camp with 125 mph winds. My son called and said all the buildings were intact and there were only 4 trees down on the 150 acres. Being on the left side of the storm is the key to survival.

The "Bug Shoot" was fun but only 5 of us shot. Not a lot of people interested in shooting muzzleloaders any more for some reason?

A cold, wet summer but now it gets up to 90o.  I thought summer was supposed to be hot, not going into fall!  Just had two days in the 80s before today.  Fall may be warm again this year.
I'm not suffering from the heat because heat is what one expects in Georgia, or should expect.  My squeeze suffers from heat but I've been accustomed to it from the flatlands of Georgia.  She's a mountain girl and was used to cooler weather.

Rain and wind for the next 3 days.  The leaves are turning.  Another year gone by.  1 less summer in the timeline of life.  Enjoy them.  70 or 80 summers really isn't that many.  They click off pretty fast as you start to age.

Try to appreciate the coming winter season. There aren't many left.....
