[hmm] I have been wanting to build or put something together for a while. I have an old CVA 45 Kentucky rifle barrel that was rusted bad, but after cleaning and a rifle bore light looking at it,. It is real good after the first 6 inches past the muzzle. So I will build the Kentucky pistol kit and be able to convert back and forth to a Bounty Pistol with an 18 or so inch barrel....I have a rib and ramrod thimble to put on the Bounty Barrel... I have looked for parts and prices and discovered I can buy a complete Kentucky Pistol kit way cheaper than buying all the parts to make the Bounty Pistol ?!? pnic pnic And since CVA has kept the breach end the same sizes for years it looks like it will work out well?! pnic pnic
Now that should work out very nicely. thmbsup
Well,..this is the 33 inch barrel in the Pistol stock just for fun pnic pnic
that should turn out nice thmbsup
Well it will definitely have a generous sight radius.
Now that's my kind of modification. Love it. dntn
When you finish it we need a picture or a video of you firing it one handed. thmbsup
You DID say it was still going to be a pistol didn't you? blah
OK So an update on the Progress [hmm] and new dilemmas hdslp on the Bounty Kentucky Pistol build... I installed the rear sight and cut a dovetail for the Front Rifle sight on the shortened barrel (17 inch) This rifle was so old that the barrel tenons were welded on pnic pnic ?? No problem Right? I just cut it off with the Dremel tool thmbsup ....but now I dicover,.. the welds are Exactly the place ware I need to drill and tap for the Nose-piece screws pnic pnic So,..How hard is that steel going to be?? I also put a belt hook on the pistol and it looks like it will work out quite well thmbsup More sanding and then figuring out if I need add a tenon and pin the longer barrel to the pistol stock [hmm]
so far ,so good dntn
OK,. So now an update on the Progress [hmm] and new dilemmas hdslp on the Bounty Kentucky Pistol build. I still need to drill the long barrel for the Rib and Thimble and install it. but so far so good thmbsup and [hmm] I need to make a Ramrod for the Bounty Barrel as well ... hntr
I really like the job you did. The short barrel looks the best.
that`l look a whole lot better with the under rib and thimbles !
It should shoot ok with or without the underrib.
It may take a fairly heavy charge to shoot its best since that was a rifle barrel and they are normally a slower twist than a pistol barrel.
That said, it should shoot fine at 25 yds even with a light charge. I have a .44 rifle that used to be shot regularly with 10 gr 3f and it shot fine to 25 yds. It didn't have enough velocity to do much past 50 yds, but the little girl that I made it for loved it and I shot it that way at times too.
My .40 Lange flinter shoots ok at 25 yds with 20 gr 3f but prefers 40-45 gr for general work. That light charge just kind of goes poof instead of bang in a rifle but it still puts a hole in the paper.
hntr
the steel on those barrels ( in fact any muzzleloader barrel ) isn`t all that hard ! fairly easy to work , drilling should be no problem at all !
just a thought. shouldn't to fore stock be as long as the barrel?? with so short a ramrod, the patched bullet will never be seated and firing the gun can and will result in a burst barrel and personal injury. What am I missing?
"I need to make a Ramrod for the Bounty Barrel as well ..."
He already answered your question.

I think I have to agree with Pilgrim, I understand this is a convertible so I would think two ramrods - one for the shorty and another for the longer barrel with a guide attached to help hold the ramrod when using the longer barrel?
Well I have the Under-rib and Thimble ready,. and have ordered Ramrod Ends from Track of the wolf.. to make the 5/16 Ramrod 18 inch +\- Bounty Barrel Ramrod,.. hdslp now for some Precise pnic hole drilling and tapping pnic and I should be good thmbsup
Very cool so far, I'm looking forward to the range report.
My thoughts on a ramrod for this would be that it should be looked at like the ramrod for my half stocks as opposed to my full stocks. Have a half rib, an additional thimble or two and a ramrod of sufficient length to handle the barrel length for loading and cleaning. It would entail more drilling but it would work fine and wouldn't look out of place. You would already have the entry thimble for the pistol barrel. 'SNTY"
Looks good. Definitely one-of-a-kind as far as I can tell. I want to know how it shoots, too.
OK,.. this is pretty much what the final result on the Kentucky Pistol / Bounty Pistol convertible project will be like.. Bounty barrels Ramrod is finished except for pinning the ends and I still need to get a hold of a M4x.07 Tap and a M5x.08 Tap [hmm] and then do some final tweaking but it looks like its going to work out well so far... then a few coats of Tung Oil should bring out the character and protect the wood thmbsup Then I get to see how it shoots...... hntr
thmbsup looks good !
Just a thought but did you ever consider setting it up for a detachable shoulder stock? Especially with the long barrel installed it could serve as a pistol and rifle.

I think it will be easier to make one. CVA breech plugs and drums are NOTORIOUSLY difficult to remove without damage.

If you think they are hard to remove, just wait until you try to put one back together. With that drum drilled and threaded into the breach plug it is almost impossible to line everything up and make it work again.
I forgot it was a flintlock, there is no drum and most of their flintlocks did`nt even have a touch hole liner . might not be that bad at all !

Well with the Bounty Kentucky Pistol finished... [hmm] I had to come up with a way to store and reload and shoot it pnic pnic So I made a few modifications to my pistol loading stand and now even have a way to store the regular pistol barrel on it so I can change back and fourth between a Bounty Pistol and a Kentucky Pistol,.. Just in-case they don't think it is Too fair for someone to be using half a long-rifle as a pistol?? ROFL ROFL
That is so cool. I like it, nice work. Have you shot it yet?
Better work on building up your arm strength in order to hold that sucker up for an offhand shot.

Let me add that LEGALLY the pistol can't be tested/fired until I examine it and am satisfied it is safe and does not violate any existing federal laws. This only takes a few months, 9 or 10, for my approval or denial.
Hanshi, Don't bet on that fast a turnover. Last time the Feds came and got one of my barrels for testing I got it back in 16mo.
OK Range Report on the Bounty Pistol....Sort of?!? The Fort Greenville Muzzle Loaders had our Spring Camp..It was Small Camp this year because of the Corona Virus. But I had the Chance and so I went camping and shooting! thmbsup I took along the Bounty Pistol to try it out...Since it was a rifle barrel with a slow twist rifling I had read someplace that a small charge lets the slow rifling work better [hmm] so I tried my normal plinking charge from my other Kentucky pistol of 20 grains for my first shot. I primed the pan and aimed and pulled the trigger thmbsup But pnic pnic I got a flash in the Pan? :'( I re-primed and Fired again pnic I got another flash in the Pan? hdslp... I picked the vent again and noticed it felt very hard in there?? Turns out 20+/- grains in a Rifle Barrel puts the Ball directly behind the vent hole 'shok' So I effectively Dry balled with powder in the barrel?? after pulling the ball the Woods Walk started so I will give it a try next shoot,.. probably try 30 grains? or just add powder till I can feel the powder with the pick and use that as the minimum?? Unless someone knows the minimum load for a 1960's CVA 45 Kentucky Rifle?? And I still had a very good Time! and some good luck thmbsup And had my best Hawk and Knife Score ever!
And the lying and refreshments around the camp Fire was Excellent!! They did not order medallions for this years camp because we didn't even know if we would be able to have our 2 day May Shoot and Camp because of the Virus pnic ?!? So I made a fitting Medallion for the Camp Myself.. thmbsup And,..I am pretty sure Rocky was Drinking on guard duty? but he is denying it.... ;D so I will just take his word on it....
Glad you could make it out. We are still mostly shut down but there is talk of opening ranges up by mid June. :applause:
According to the old, yellowed CVA load chart I have on hand, the recommended powder load for accuracy (PBR and 3f) is 40-65 grains. The maximum recommended load is 95 grains.
If it were me, as scary as that thought might be, I would start at 30 grains and work up from there. We were shooting the Howdah pistol with it's 11" barrel, tightly patched 50 cal ball, and 50 grains of 3f with no problems at all. Of course there was no accuracy at all either but there was a nice flame spurting out the end of the barrel!
In my .50 flint pistol I'll use 20 to 30 grains 3F for targets and general shooting. When it goes with me into the bush it is loaded with at least 40 grains of 3F. Recoil with heavier loads is a bit more than with my .44 mag.
hotfxr Thanks for the load information thmbsup and advice! Those Howdah pistols are Way Cool and must be a Hoot to shoot....Especially at twilight or at night... thmbsup
Hanshi yes I Should have realised the just because the Tang and breach on the CVA/Traditions look the same on the outside and the Vent is in the same place [hmm] the Powder volume in the breach [hmm] is different between a rifle and pistol barrel pnic pnic
My pleasure. By the way, when Hanshi is done testing it, make sure he sends it out to me for West coast testing, before it gets to Red Badger. He can't hit anything anyway so he winds up using rifles as clubs. It's not pretty. ROFL
It is a good looking pistol and I am happy that you got it done even with HOTFXR's meddling.... Enjoy it ! I am travelling on Kansas so can't give you more encouragement right now....
