Title: Discussion starter....There can be only one....
Post by: Hawken50 on January 31, 2019, 08:06:33 PM
[hmm]   Ok,,,,you can have only one muzzleloader....I can be rifle or pistol,,,what would it be?...For me it would be a 45 caliber Early Virginia flintlock rifle.   Enough power for deer sized game but could still take a squirrel or rabbit.
...What would be your choice?

Ooookay!  Only one, huh?  It would be my late Lancaster .45 X 13/16" X 36".  I've killed more deer with this fine rifle than any other.  If it couldn't be the Lancaster it would be my .62 X 38" smoothbore.  hntr

Only one of mine? That's a hard one but it would have to be my Mongrel built CVA Mountain Rifle in .45. For the same reason that Hanshi noted.

Mine would be my .50 cal. Sile Hawken Hunter. It was the second percussion rifle I ever bought but has been the best for hunting with its shorter barrel and fast twist. I've taken about 35 deer with it with few problems.

It would have to be my Lyman GPR .54. Good for deer, good for elk, good for bear. Why in the world would anyone hunt squirrels?  ucrzy

If there can only be ONE, I find that to be totally unacceptable!!  We are not waiting in the long line to buy toilet paper YET!     srndr

I did say YET mind you.   The future may find us all very lucky to have just one!

Me too. I currently have 11 black powder long guns (including shotguns) and 9 handguns. I find that number to be barely adequate but I don't feel too deprived.
With only one I would feel naked.  pnic

dntn No need to take the question with "over seriousness".  It's basically just a fun discussion starter that gives us a chance to talk about our "favorite" gun.  We'll all be long gone by the time toilet paper lines form.  Even then, there are still stashes of Sears catalogs here and there.  chrrs

That would be my .45 Deer Creek flintlock (CVA Mountain rifle parts) with 7/8" Colerain barrel for the reasons already mentioned.  Great minds run in similar circles!

If I could only have could only have one I would have to be my 54 cal TC. Now you may say I am cheating as that one came as package deal with a 12 ga barrel.

If I could only have one black powder rifle,  it would be the CVA caplock 45 caliber rifle.  I really enjoy how well it shoulders and instantly comes on point of aim,  also the fact that it is accurate while using less powder and lead than my  50's and 54's.   And it does not beat the s#%t out of  my shoulder.   It is a pure joy to shoot,  it may not be pretty with the 2 part  stock,  but then but then again,  beauty is only skin deep.  The only improvement that would make this rifle the best is if it were a FLINTLOCK.

If I could only  have one black powder rifle it would be Miss Dora, my 45 cal. CVA flintlock Mountain rifle. Like Pilgrim said Miss Dora shoulders well and is right on target.  She is a true shooter and puts it right where I aim it.  I have spent many a hour sitting waiting on a deer to show up and she has taken several and never let me down.  She has killed a number of squirrels   and a coyote .  She is a good huntin partner and wouldn't want to go without her!

My CVA caplock 45 cal. mountian rifle, which has taken several elk and deer over the last 20 or so years.

Gee, don't you know it takes at least a .54 or maybe a cannon to drop an elk?  Even some of the state game people say that.  Maybe they never heard of shot placement.

Muzzleloaders are like beers. The best one is the one in your hand RIGHT NOW.  But if you're forcing me to make a choice,
it might have to be the .58 Hawken, made by W. B. Selb that I'm off to pick up in a week or two.
And yes, I WILL be posting pictures.  ;D

Looking forward to seeing those photos, Dogshirt.

On a tangent - forgive me, please - I find it interesting that quite a few owners name their guns and always refer to them by that name.  I've never named any gun I've owned, but there is one notable exception; and that gun is my .62 smoothbore, Ol' Loudmouf.  And I doubt the name needs any explanation for you guys.  hntr

One gun and nothing else would have to be 12 guage for the same reason early muskets were smooth bore: versitility. A ball or slug will take down a deer or elk if you play the game right.

I would also cheat and say one long gun and one handgun. It would be a .44 (magnum).

Hanshi didn't say they had to shoot black powder.

The muzzleloader would be my old .54 Renegade with an extra .32 barrel, not because either is especially accurate, just the versitility.

I guess if I could only have one it would have to be my 20 ga. fowler because of the versatility. It would work for anything I would need to shoot, winged, four legged, or two legged, 'SNTY" fine shot to buck and ball.   'SNTY"

Flintboomer, are you saying black powder is NOT the only powder available?  Blue match heads, maybe.  And what is a .44 magnum?   pnic

I think Colt made one called a Walker. It was designed to shoot SIX TIMES before you had to reload and it was designed to replace the calvary carbine!!! What will they think of next?
