I had this coat made based on pictures of the character of Jim Bowie in the most recent Alamo movie and my measurements. The material is a medium weight wool that I picked up locally as is the cotton lining. The buttons are bone that came from the Quarter master General.
What do y'all think?
I have to add pictures carefully so I don't overload things.
My firearm and accoutrements.
I absolutely love it.
Good looking coat William
Thank you both. I'm hoping that the coat is both fashionable as well as useful for when I go hunting 1830's style. However, right now we're on track to setting a record for the hottest June on record so it's almost impossible for me to remember a time that I needed something to keep me warm. srndr

While visiting the family homestead back in the 90's, I was asking my uncle about Civil War uniforms and he said that they still had some hanging in a closet. I was amazed at one, how much smaller adults were back then, and two, it's a miracle anyone survived a summer in central Alabama wearing clothes made from wool at least 1/4" thick. He proceeded to tell me that thick heavy wool was the Kevlar of the day and it actually protected the wearer from the heat. After all this time I still don't believe him about the heat. Indonesia in the summer is like a cool breeze compared to Alabama.
That belief that thick wool will protect you from the heat is still around but I've never wanted to put it to the test.
I believe that they understood that moving slower in the heat was important.
That is a very nice coat for sure. You will need some appropriate headgear to keep that blazing sun from baking you in it though.
