my oldest is now 10 and wants to go deer hunting. I was thinking about a traditional since that is what I shoot but have been having a hard time finding one. Any guidance?
I bought a .50 cal. CVA Bobcat with a semi-OK barrel for my 9 y.o. granddaughter. She used it to kill a spike at 25 yards. The load was a .490 PRB over 45 gr. of 3F blackpowder.
I shortened the plastic stock with a hacksaw and added a thick rubber recoil pad so it fit her.
One of our esteemed members here used to build' rifles specifically for younger folks who had shorter lengths of pull, 12 inches and less. Cutting off the plastic stock of Bobcat and attaching a recoil pad may be the way to go but a wood stock purposely made with a short LOP keeps all the dimensions in the right places. The muzzleloaders I'm referring to were called Rugrat rifles by the builder himself, who unfortunately is no longer taking orders. However, since young folks tend to grow and the Rugrat rifles were built to last, there might be some available if you ask around the forum here. Even if it's a long shot it doesn't hurt to ask.
Here is a picture of a young man and the buck he took with his Rugrat rifle.
I sent you a PM. I may have what you are looking for.

Good luck on your search... Mike Lange's rugrat rifles are hard to beat, and the prices are very reasonable... you might PM "mongrel" and perhaps he can put you in touch with one of his creations current owners who might be persuaded to part with one of them....
I have several CVA Bobcats available. I have cut some down in the past and saved the cut off. They can be put back in place with a sleeve inside since the plastic stocks are hollow. From youth to adult.
