Ignore the cracks out of the Peanut Gallery and build away, I'm looking forward to seeing #17 come together.

Smart Alec? I have never claimed to be smart and my name is not Alec. At least I don't think it is. As much as I hate to promulgate my ignorance, I have never heard of a blanket gun. But I am going to go out on a limb here and assume (I know, I know) that a blanket gun is a smaller version of a canoe gun. (Being a blanket wraps around you so close that even Red Badger could hit it) I would even go so far as to guess it gets it's moniker by way of being able to be hidden under a lap blanket , say on a stage coach or train. How close am I?  Regardless of it's purpose in life, I am confident that if Woody builds it, it will be a fine example of a blanket gun.

Woody,
Your builds are an inspiration to those of us with eyes to see the beauty of your creations,  Please forgive our Californian brother ( Brother, in the loosest sense possible) as he has been so poisoned  living in that den of inequity he has forgotten even the most basic of rules here....  cuch

Carry on with the build and I hope to see pictures of another master creation of yours.... and just to enlighten us exactly what is a blanket gun?

It's for a friend, his barrel and lock. I'd say it should cover it and then some!

In the old tv western "Wanted Dead or Alive" starring the late Steve McQueen, the cut down Winchester repeater he called a "mare's leg", was a blanket gun.  He used a holster but.....
They are great weapons until you have to fire one.  Woody, yours will of, course, be a masterpiece as is your usual art.

I always thought a blanket gun was one built to be put on the trade blanket.

Due to the holidays, weather and other obligations I haven't gotten as far on it as I had hoped but at this point, bbl. in and pinned, butt plate, trigger and guard made, lock inlet, ram rod channel cut and drilled. As soon as I get the trigger and butt plate installed it'll be on to shaping.

As far as the names blanket gun, canoe gun, coach gun, etc., they are all modern or period terms given to these firearms, be they manufactured or cut down,  most likely reflect the way they may have been used or documented to have been used. For example, some of these cut down guns were among the weapons hidden under their blankets by Pontiac's followers at Fort Detroit (On May 7 1763, Pontiac entered the fort with about 300 men, armed with weapons hidden under blankets, determined to take the fort by surprise.) Plains Indians often used these cut down gun for hunting buffalo on horseback (often referred to as a buffalo runner gun).  A modern example, 18 in. bbl. shotgun (riot gun), the same shotgun with a youth length shoulder stock and a 14 in. bbl. (entry gun). No matter what we call them they most certainly did and do exist....besides...that's what he wants and  he can call it whatever he likes, I'm just happy to build it for him.  ;D

Got a break in the weather, butt plate installed, trigger installed, everything pinned, screwed and ready to start the rough shaping with the next brake in the weather...... hdslp

Lookin' good Woody! I like the simple butplate. Are those hand forged nails?

Yes on the nails. These were guns cut down for whatever reason and usually would not have a butt plate, thus a smaller cut down plate ordered by the owner.

Slow going on this project but between the weather, the wife's cataract surgery, just not getting the time in the shop I have finally managed to get it 90% roughed out.

Despite the delay it's looking good. I'm sure that Dryball would have been proud.

Got the early serpent sideplate made today and put a dry run of the parts assembled....getting close. My friend wants it in the white so after some final sanding, making the ramrod, and maqking sure she functions properly it's off to the new owner. I'll try to post finished pictures but if I can't at least you have a good idea of how it's going to look.

I've got one started with Ash stock, 12ga bore 25" barrel, more on the lines of a canoe gun. Hope to pick up a lock at The Ancient Ones gun show next week. I plan on using it for turkey elimination. hntr

Now it's looking like what has been described as a "canoe" gun.  And, Jesse168, if I had a gun like that it would NEVER go on a trade blanket.  (susp)

I like little guns a lot but wouldn't want a barrel shorter than, say, 20".

Here is a Youtube link to a original stutz jager I thought was rather neat. I have a 14 inch .45 cal. barrel I plan on building into something based on the one in the video.

that`s an interesting little carbine .  while back I had a pedersoli bounty hunter , 16 3/8 inch .44 cal barrel , had thought of using the barrel , lock and ramrod thimbles for a small carbine !

After building this one and watching this video I realized I had every thing on hand to build one of these little buggers for myself sometime....so what the heck, might as well !  ROFL
