At my first major rendezvous around 1970 my first competition was the Seneca Run. So, I ran to the first location and loaded my rifle, aimed , and fired. PFFSSST....No BOOM!, primed again and...PFFSSST....Again no BOOM! Now there are about 50 or 60 long time buckskinners standing there watching me make a fool of myself trying to shoot without powder...laughing there fool heads off....from then on I was known as Dryball. When Bullfrog mentioned my dryballing once where he saw me and Adam chipped in his 2 cents worth...it all came back to me. I have outlived the humiliation, so I think I'll keep that nickname.

When I was in the Air Force, I went TDY to Columbia. One of the things that you had to do your first night was to get a call sign, because it was a classified location and there could be no first names. To make a long story short, I was given the name Bam Bam.
Do you want it on your avatar David? We need to move Special Person if so.
Ned
Looks good to me like that!
I've had a number of nicknames over the years, including some not acceptable here. My curent one, with the guys I shoot skeet with, is "the professor" due to my post retirement part-time occupation of teaching. So I'll go with that one please.
You got it!
Ned
Hey Ned, my huntin pard refers to me as "Old codger". Funny thing is...he's older than me ;D ;D...Bud
You are now Old codger!
Ned
Ned mine was always nip because i was faster than the other guys when in the boxing ring.
Bernie ;D
I guess mine will be Crackshot. Not because of my shooting ability but because of my quick one liners. ;D
Translations...his preferred target :o ...dont let him get behind you!
Dryball
lol! :D
One hot summer day years ago I was at work and pulled off my shirt to cool down, a black friend of mine saw me and said "you are hairry as a bear and white as rice so I'm going to call you Whitebear" so I took that as a nickname.
I am but oneshooter among many!!!

Ned
well my nick name is already part of my name but I can tell you how I got it.....I work construction and of course everybody has to have a nickname right?! Well I started crowing like a rooster one day at work ( I use it as a turkey locator when I turkey hunt) and from that day on I was known to everybody on the job sight as rooster.
Thanks fer the Name it looks fittin' there... ;)

because of my passion for mule ear rifles most of my shooting buddies call me "sideslapper"--spud
At my first voo, because the people I voo with are mean and evil, my camp was pulled and turned 180 degrees, so the name "Wrong Way" was bestowed upon me.
More years ago than I care to remember, the club I belonged just elected me chairman of the muzzleloading group and we booked a bunch of rooms for the Kalamazoo gun show. Around dinner time on friday night, we were all milling around the lobby trying to decide where to eat. I got tired of waiting so I headed out the door and into my truck. Down the road I go with everyone following me like I know where I'm going. I've never been to k-zoo before so I had no clue where I was going. After heading out of town for about 15 miles, the choices and civilization were really getting thin. In the distance was a single light that you would expect to be a diner. It wasn't. It was a small engine repair shop. We[all 20 vehicles] turned around and ended up at the restaurant right next to the hotel! Whenever I went to the salad bar, someone always left a trail of crumbs behind me so I could find my way back. It's a name I use all the time. Most folks don't know who Ted is, but know Pathfinder. I also get lost in the woods on a regular basis,no matter how many times I hunt the same piece of land! hdslp
Once upon a time I worked as an electrical lineman...when I would climb utility poles in my hooks and gaffs, I climbed with such an erect posture that the other linemen joked that I looked like a stick bug climbing a tree. Ever since that time I have been called "Stick". ;D
Was called Bodine ever since I was a wee lad so changed it to Beau since I am older, added the age, never did like Bo, to much resemblance to body odor, lol.
Ain't got a nickname yet. But I'm sure somebody will lay one on me before long.
well ,I have silver hair and green eyes ,and tend to growl when angry . so a couple of kids I work with hung the title ,werewolf of mcsherrystown ,on me . that got twisted by a buddie whos into native american mythology , so he hung skinwalker, on me that being a navajo witch who can shape shift ! not a good thing , but what the heck ! so I`ve been skinwalker for the last 14 years !
I've always had a problem with authority so I was dubbed Outlaw a long time ago . Since then I have changed my wayward ways but the name stuck. So I put a twist on my call name Aka-Kesler Because as all know an Outlaw also will have another alias hdslp
Well I suppose i had better let ya all in on how I got my name too....
Way back in the olden days... I was a young Air Force Cop, and had a tendency to be a speed demon. I was either jamming my foot through the floorboards in govnment trucks or twisting the throttle on my motorcycle so someone started to call me Jammin Jim, when I deployed to a classified location as has been describe elswhere her we used call signs and mine was Jammin Jim, was shortened for a while to JJ but when JJ Walker made the name popular the rednecks I was with went back to Jammin Jim... and the rest is history...

I was trading with another guy, and a third guy chirped in, "He's trustworthy: Dave's a real boyscout."
Well, I pointed out that I WAS a boyscout, and so knew what testesterone-driven, deceitful, wicked little troublemakers real boyscouts can be.
Well, since then I have the nicname "Scouter Dave!"

I spent a lot of time out west growing up, around a bunch of older guys, kinda like a gang of bad uncles, that set me some bad (or really really good) examples. Let's just say that I like to fish, and keep and eat what I catch. My favorite fish is trout, and I can't think of a single camping trip to Wyoming, Montana, or Idaho, that didn't involve at least one wrapped up in tinfoil, with onions, lemon pepper, and butter, sizzling in a campfire. So much so, that when I was in school, my friends called me Trout. I'd kinda like that as a nickname I think. I've always liked that philosophy of give a man a fish and you feed him for one meal, teach a man to fish, and you feed him for life. My bad uncles did right by me.
There ya go..."Trout"
Back in 1984 or so. I met this guy that shot blackpowder when I was in the USAF - He named me Dan'l and it stuck for a long time

We's sure getting some interesting names, wish more folks would explain how they come by them, just a suggestion, Di ( named Diann), grandma to more kids than want to count (few are mine by blood) not really they are a great bunch of kids, but not kids now, grown men, Bulldog lady, egg lady (scrambled) bread lady and others not to be mentioned here, Just glad to see everybody participate and share. Thanks
I actually have 3 nicknames I go by that can be explained here (and several others that cant be used here) The ones that can be used here all tie back to my heritage/persona-- Jacques, Frenchy, and Voy. they all go to my 7x great grandfather-Jacques DeNoyon, a french candian trapper/trader who was the first one to have had the term voyageur used with his name in the fur trade. He was the first european to have explored the area I now live in 1688.
As for the ones that cant be explained here, lets just say there are some youngsters, ladies and sensitive ears here, and the list is a bit long besides.

My nick name came from my friends picking on me. You see, I have a dismal track record for hunting elk. I always spend a min. of an entire week hiking up & down the mountains near the tree line (over 11,000ft here) chasing the elk in the early season but have been skunked for three years running. All my friends say that I look like a "backpack with legs" because I am short and stocky built. They were saying things like"you look like one of those short heavy dudes that carry all the equipment up Everest for mountain climbers" I said you mean Sherpas? And it has stuck ever since! It used to bug me but now I like it.
Im surprised ol Dapper Don hasn't told his story yet... Well, since he hasn't gotten around to it, I'll go ahead and enlighten all of you. strpot First a little background... Don is retired USAF and was good at his job. As you know some military folk take neat and orderly to a whole new level and Don just happens to be one of them. I don't believe that I have ever seen Don dirty! We have been cuttin and splitting wood all day and he looks as fresh as he started ??? Don also carries this into his vous life as well. He has some very nice dandy clothes and a very neat and orderly camp. He dresses well for vous and his lace is always fresh! hdslp He is not a dandy or a fop though. Just crisp. So us wiseasses in our Ranger group which Don is a part of as well have taken to calling him Dapper Don. Lately. however we have considered changing his moniker because of certain behavior... strpot Every afternoon. even at camp, ol Don cant be found for a few hours because he is TAKING A NAP! ROFL Therefor we are considering changing his name to....... NAPPER Don! ROFL ROFL ROFL
My nickname, or screen name, whichever ya wanta call it is Micanopy, prounounced "MicK An OH Pee" is used to honor an ancestor. Micanopy was a great leader of the Seminole and Mikasuki people in the 1800's. He was a man of great thought and wisdom and clearly saw that the future of his people was lost unless they could learn to live peacefully with the whites. However this would change and he became a figure of staunch resistance to further emmigration of whites into Florida. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micanopy
Rather than use my proper name could you please change my handle to "Greyfox"...Should I figure out how to post a picture - all will understand! Thank You
Greyfox,
Likewise for me. As I've stated elsewhere, what ain't grey is bare. More bare every day.
Wouldn't have any idea why....but my buddies at voo call me big foot. I only wear a size 13 shoe though...
i got the nickname hammerhead way back when when i was a little kid you know 10 years ago cause i always rammed my head through things one time the glass window on a screen door
Well my name says it all, don't loan me your tomahawk at a rondy. I buy alot of handles for friends.
Thanks for sharing- make it easier to relate to names, get to wonder about some ?
My SASS alias is SFT, although I just use my real first name here on TMC. I took that nickname/alias to honor my late grandfather who was a member of the AVG/Flying Tigers (Sons of the Flying Tigers) but rather than go through the entire explanation I just say it stands for Santa Fey Trail where my cowboy persona was born. Someday I hope to earn a proper nickname befitting my current experience.

my nickname started when i was a very young boy. i was 3 years old when my momma started to call "crazell".(I'M NOW 47) i was the kid that had to wear bells or anything that would make noise. her and the rest of the family thought i was crazy or something. i got into everything and out of everything my mom said. so I've been called that by my family and older friends. my shoot'n name is "row". but i know brokenhawk will probably give me a different name. I'm a little concerned hdslp ROFL. his name suits him fine. he brakes at least 1-2 handles every rondy!!!when he sticks it, HE STICKS IT!!! flwa
Well, I am new to the form but I got a nickname, it's because of my surname name Baird, there is a bread co. in the Texas area called "Mrs.Baird Bread" some call me doughboy but I like The Loaf it fits because, I am as big as a loaf of bread.
Robert "The Loaf" Baird so its just Loaf, besides I am lazy and I Loaf around.
When I first started, I was spending my summers as the waterfront director at the local boy scout camp. I was given the nick-name 'Big Fish'. Then, in the process of reading Eastern NA history, I encountered the person in Shawnee history called 'Sinnanatha'-'Big Fish'. He was a white who had been captured and adopted into the tribe. So the story is-I am a Wendat warrior/legend teller (born and raised in Wyandotte, Michigan-Wyandotte being what the English settlers called the Wendat), who was given the nick-name 'Sinnanatha' by his Shawnee brothers when he was fighting the English in the Ohio Valley, circa 1750-1760's. And that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!
Hmmmm, I was just re reading the posts here and relalized that I have not updated my "Red Badger" name.
Some of you may remember when I changed my handle from JamminJim to Red Badger.... I was at the Grouse Creek Rendezvouse with a Lakota Elder who asked me my cmap name. Upon hearing that I did not have one he left me alone for a while and went to his camp, the next thing I heard was him hollering to the camp loud enough to wake the dead and walking toward me.... He grabbed me by the arm and announced to the entire camp that he had been walking in the spirirt world meditating on me, he saw a red badger in his vision ad decreed that from that time forward I would be known as Red Badger.
I am honored that he took the time to seek a name for me - a pilgrim who had at theat point only been to three rendezvous befroe that. I will use that name for the rest of my life....
"Bigfoot" was given to me after a bunch of us were caught in a snowstorm while hunting in the Adirondacks. Some of the old guys were concerned about getting out the five miles to the trucks in all that snow. Someone suggested that I lead them out, breaking trail for them since I have a size 14 boot and leave a pretty large track. The name just stuck.
ROFL Well since i'm a dispatcher for a trucking company my nicknames are not for a family friendly site.
Two stories about nick-names. Mine is "Hang-Fire". Here's how I got it. I went to a range and saw this youngster trying to get his Hatfield flintlock rifle to go off. He kept getting a flash in the pan. I told him, "keep it pointed down range for at least 2 minutes and I'll help you..." Rifle had been loaded with patched ball and PYRODEX which is why he had no ignition. So I made sure ball was seated, picked the vent clear and worked some 4F into the vent. Prime and fire. Pan flashed, then ssssss....boom! Youngster was happy. We looked at the target and I had drilled it dead center. So the name stuck.
Second story. A buddy of mine who is now deceased was shooting at range. He was aiming his rifle and about to fire when he passed gas. Not just a little "toot" but a real buck snorter. Someone shouted "Who fired that?"And someone else said, "Everyone knows it's Windy"Well, he was already known as "Weasel" so he became "Windy Weasel" after that. ROFL
This is an old thread and I just found it?? (susp)
The name I go by every day is actually a nickname. There have been others that can't be posted on a family forum. Some I had stuck for a while and were forgotten. But the one I earned - and only used by students, other martial artists speaking formally and, of course, here on the forum. The one I'm talking about is obviously "Hanshi". It's a Japanese title given to only a few. There has to be a a certain rank achieved; but it has other requirements beyond that. It is the highest title in the martial arts referring ones position in the teaching hierarchy. Others I've rated - but are only used (again) in the martial arts community - are Grandmaster, professor and the most commonly used; sensei.
But outside the dojo I'm just plain, old Tommy, short for Thomas. Actually my students, former students and some other sensei even when outside the confines of the dojo say "Sir". I have a habit of telling them all I'm just "Tommy"; however, this familiarity is often frowned upon by my peers and superiors. So, forget all my 4 letter nicknames...please. ROFL fght pnic 'shok'
Hanshi, thanks for bring back to the top
I find it interesting that the few friends I have left from my childhood who used to all go by their first names with the added "y" on the end, get upset with me if I call them that these days!
I last saw Timmy about a year ago and when I greeted him that way.......he frowned and blatantly replied,
My name is Tim!
I still get away with the added y when talking to my many brothers, There is Johnny, Tommy, Chucky, Marky, Brucey, and Scotty! They still call me........Joey and I am fine with that and actually find that anyone that I know who calls me Joey must have known me for a very long time.
I forgot to add that my Cranbrook handle comes from an old 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook I once owned and played with restoration back in the early 1980's. It was a fun and solid old car and I think of myself as fun, old, and solid............so [hmm] hi:
I like your post, Cranbrook. Along those lines I'm still called "Tommy"; sometimes "Tom" but mostly Tommy. My cohort of friends and I actually have always called each other by our last names and still do. These are childhood friends; newer friends do the "Tommy" thing. Thing about it is that I never really grew up. (susp)
When my younger brother became an officer in the US Army, he stopped being Tom and insisted on Thomas. Being a captain went to his head. The guys at Ft. Hood had many other "nicknames" for him most of them ending with the word 'hole' or 'head'. [hmm]

My actual name is Thomas, hence, Tommy.
I have always been Jim, or James... it was never Jimmy. I don't know why but the only one who ever got to call me Jimmy was my Grandmother... I Think my dad might have had something to do with it, he hated Jimmy... Maybe Grandma had called him Jimmy his whole life until I cam along... Who knows....
depends on who`s talking too me . known as joe by those I`ve worked with over the years , lee by family , and friends have hung a multitude of names on me ! ROFL been almost enough to cause a multiple personality disorder ! pnic ROFL Lee comes from my middle name , LeRoy . I was named after an uncle , who was named after an uncle , and there are at least four in the family with the same name !
Cruel tricks our parents play on us. South of the Mason-Dixon line I am Charles Lee. When I am in trouble they throw my last name in. On the West coast I am "Chuck", or was until I helped build a dozen or so Pizza Time Theater's in the 80's. That was a long battle but the last person to call me Chuckee Cheese was buried several years ago. In my Black Powder group I am "Powder Maker" and in my Motorcycle group I am "Charmer", I don't know why. But having the "Chuck" moniker has scarred me for life. Think about it, it's the only name in the English language you cannot use in the Name Game. I think that actually helps explain why I am the way I am. That and since Brad and Angelina broke up, there really isn't much reason to go on anymore, is there? ROFL ROFL
I was born Edward. And when I got into trouble it was Edward "Middle Name"! (susp) When I was in BIG trouble it was Edward "Middle Name" Taasevigen! pnic I stopped being Eddie in 4th grade but there are handful of people (mostly women), that have known me since kindergarten, that I ALLOW to still call me that. These days only the Judge calls me Edward. I was dubbed Big Ed when I worked at Scout camp about 25 years ago and it has stuck. The only thing that has changed, it used to be Big Ed and Harley, my little buddy at the time, and now it's Big Ed and Otto.
And I don't use "Middle Name".
Quite some time ago, around my freshman or suffermore year of high school, I decided I wanted a crew cut. My Mom (the family barber) fixed me up. Now I have a fairly prominent proboscis, and this was in Hawaii where noses tended to be flat and wide. We were shooting baskets after school when one of the guys looked at me and said, "Hey, look at Kees, he looks like one hawk!" O-k-a-y, that stuck and I've been Hawk ever since.
About 17 years ago I signed up for the Muzzle Loader Mailing List when I found it on the Web. A requirement was that you have a pseudonym so I put Hawk. Shortly after posting that I got an email from a member who said HE was Hawk and I could bloody well find a different name. After some cogitation (after all, I didn't want to be Hawk-2) I thought that, since I was in Alaska and everyone associates Alaska with Winter, I would assume the name of Winter Hawk and I've been using that ever since.
Incidentally, the Kees referenced earlier is a good Dutch name (I'm from the old country, and all that) and is pronounced like it was spelled Case. Just so you know....
