Title: tins for making char cloth and such
Post by: beezlebob on April 03, 2016, 07:33:06 AM
I read where a guy on you tube said he got his tins and super fine steel wool at the dollar store, so I go to several around the Phoenix, AZ area, and those folks have no idea what I'm talking about, and had never heard of super fine steel wool. We went to a bunch of stores and got nothing. Gotta go over to HOME srndr DEPOT and get something else, so will check for the steel wool there.

Look for "0000" steel wool. That is the official size of super fine steel wool. If you as k for it and they don't know what it is, run to the exit because you are in the wrong store.

No one who works in a store knows what's in it except the owner (maybe). Just tell them to get out of your way and find it yourself. When checking out, do like I do and tell the workers that with 30 minutes training you could do their job better than them. It will make you real popular the next time you show up.

You could buy a tin from a place like this; http://www.papermart.com/metal-containers/id=19037-INDEX#19037

or Evilbay; http://www.ebay.com/bhp/metal-tins

and you can even buy some on Amazon but usually you have to buy several at a time.  I found some mints called Ice Chips that come in a hinged tin box exactly the same size as Altoids just not embossed.  I even have several, with and without the paint sanded or burned off.

You don't need a commercial tin to make char cloth. Buy a tin of Altoid mints or a can of shoe polish with a tight lid. Drill a very small hole in the lid of either one and it makes a perfect container for making char. They are also good for carrying lubed patches. 0000 steel wool is the finest commercial steel wool you are going to find.
