Title: nipple wrench
Post by: beowulf on September 27, 2015, 02:18:52 AM
picked up a traditions nipple wrench , and I`m rather disappointed with it . I`ve worked with brass that was harder than the supposed steel this thing is made of ! anyone know of a company that makes a nipple wrench that is`nt made from recycled marshmallows ?

Why not make your own?Take a piece of flat metal 1/8"thick or so and 2-3" long and cut a slot in the end to fit the nipple, voila open end nipple wrench that will let you remove a nipple without having the hammer get in the way.

I have seen guys cut a small socket to fit a nipple then use a wratchet to turn it.Should work on a revolver, never owned a revolver so I never needed that kind of wrench.I think the socket was 5/16 or so.

Upon further review look up the Possibles Shop they have every kind of nipple wrench around, one of the socket types is made out of 4140 steel, that should be hard enough.

I`ve owned several nipple wrenches since 78 , and it`s only been recently that they seem to be made of really soft steel .  seems the quality of everything is going down the tube !

I've got a percussion revolver cylinder loader from Rydon that's made quite well .. good price too. I don't know if that carries over to their nipple wrench though.

I just found a little 1/4 inch end wrench that works perfectly. Mine is a craftsman, so it's well made. fits the nipple on my Lyman plains riffle, .50 cal.

I'm with beezlebob, I have several nipple wrenches but it seems easier and faster to use a small 1/4" open end wrench. Some time ago I picked up some "vintage" Craftsman carburetor wrenches. These were blue-ish colored matte finish combo wrenches that didn't have the same size on both ends. (I am guessing it is so you can have two wrenches the same size without buying two sets, planned convenience, go figure) With a leather line tied to the box end hanging with a pick it is very easy to use and harder steel than any other tool in the bag.

I couldn't recommend  the ones from Track of the Wolf.  I bought one about a year ago and it broke the third time I used it.  I have always had good service from them  but they wouldn't even talk to me about it.  That was the last thing I got from them.  I won't say I'll never buy anything from them but if somebody else has what I'm looking for I'll look else where.

Except for one nipple on a Mongrel rifle that takes a metric box end wrench, I have two wrenches of unknown make that I picked up on ebay that have done everything I've put them through, INCLUDING having a cheater put on one to get out a nipple that had been in there since the dawn of time. I ALWAYS put a bit of anti-seize grease on the threads and never have an issue getting the nipples out.
One tub will last you for YEARS. Small price to pay for ease of cleaning.

I know I'm late to the party but.  Deep socket, cut to fit, best wrench ever.  For use on revolvers you may have to turn down the OD but still no big deal, electric drill & file.

I do not have any suggestions on nipple wrenches, but I have found that if do not tighten them down, just use the wrench to tighten them finger tight on cap and ball pistols, they are not as hard to get them out the next time, and they are not going to come out and get you.
Just one man experience.
