Title: Mini's & Conical vs Roundballs
Post by: mtnmike on August 09, 2015
Okay Gents,,I have a problem srndr. I have never used the Conical nor Mini bullet, the Wife bought me a new barrel for 1 of my GPR's that calls for a different bullet than I am used to using. This is a 1-32 twist which calls for a conical or mini, instead of round okay? Do you patch these or grease them or what? Any and all help appreciated,   Mike,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Grease is the word with conicals. Patching is not used and get ready for a bit more kick with a projectile that weighs about three times as much as you are used to. Not that it hurts (much) but the first time I shot one it took me by surprise.

The only conicals I shoot are maxi-balls and REALs. I use a wad under the REALs but they are still not as accurate as the Maxi-balls. I use a lube of lard and beeswax to fill the grooves on both.
I have never shot a minnie ball.

I`ve used maxi balls and minis ! maxi load harder and kick harder ! and are more accurate (in my opinion ) than the minis !

What caliber is the barrel?  50 or 54????    I  Can send .535 REAL or .540 Maxi for you to try  if the barrel is a 54 caliber.  Prelubed with SPG

I had that barrel; called the Great Plain Hunter" and found that I always go the best accuracy using a lubed fiber wad under a 230 grain Lee REAL bullet propelled by 95 grains of 3f Goex.  Now this is the only REAL bullet offered near to that weight; http://leeprecision.com/mold-d-c-50cal-250.html
At 75 yards with open sights it was one hole accurate, just murder on my shoulder.  Other conicals were okay but none matched the REAL in accuracy.
