Title: Transporting full size cannons
Post by: punjab on July 24, 2015, 09:55:52 PM
Do any of you that have full size cannons ever get into difficulties with police? An aquaintance of mine has a full size 1800s type cannon replica that he hauls around to different rendys where they have cannon competitions or demos.Usually he covers it with a tarp after its loaded on his trailer and lashed down,in one case he was in a rush to get home and didn't tarp it so he is riding along the freeway suddenly the flashing red lights come on and the State Patrol pull him over. The State officer was a little testy and pointed out that he had traffic backed up for about a mile, apparently none of the trailing drivers wanted to get any where near a cannon pointed at them.He had not broken any laws but that didn't help much with the officer,so he tarped the cannon with the officer standing over him,he was late getting home

Living near Gettysburg and not to far from Ft. Shenandoah, cannons hauled down the road are seasonal occurrences.  20 Years ago, they were generally hauled uncovered.  Today mostly in enclosed trailers or box trucks.  Just to protect the cannon from road hazards and weather more than to avoid anti gun officers.   In this day and age however, a muzzle loading cannon, travels with explosives.  No sense alerting the jihadists.

Agree - I usually don't have an issue as mine rides low enough that it can't be seen unless by something bigger than my truck... but the sight of lights behind me after each new town, or county line does get tiresome.... "Yes officer it is a real black powder cannon, No officer we can't shoot it into that field just for you .... "

Given the anti-gun fervor of the ultra left wing area I live in, I doubt I would get more than a mile from my house before I had DHS and every other law enforcement agency come down on my head if I tried to transport an uncovered cannon. Not one of them is acquainted with the rules and regulations pertaining to muzzle loading black powder firearms.

living in hanover pa , just a few miles from gettysburg , there`s less of the anti gun bull ! cops dont bother people transporting cannons , and even state troopers if they see you generally ignore you ! ...unless of course they`re interested in black powder guns and such !  ROFL
