Title: Mike Lange rifle
Post by: William on January 30, 2015
Finally got a chance to shoot the 50 caliber caplock that Mike built for me over a year ago.  Started with 50 grains of 3f Goex and ended with 75.  I wasn't sighting in just shooting but I did get to also finally use the dry lube that Dutch recommends and it seemed to work well.  The front sight definitely needs to be filed down but that's for another day.

I took one picture of the target (only 4 shots) but my desktop is having problems and I can't seem to downsize it enough to be accepted for posting.  Anyone want to help me out on this?

Yeah, I had a friend take half a day off and he met me at the range, also letting me shoot his 1911 and AR while we were there.  I taught his GF how to load and shoot a muzzle loader while we were there too.  Turns out all three of us are lefties so my rifle was just the ticket.

At the request of our right minded yet wrong sided shooter, here is the picture of his inaugural Mongrel made muzzleloader premiere. Note: Being it is from William, I had to reverse the image.  ROFL   (Not really)

I am in your debt Sir!

On that note, the target was set at 50 yards and the two shots that are low centered were using a mattress ticking shooting patch with Dutch Schoultz's dry lube recipe.  The two flyers were shot using some very old pre-cut and lubed patches.  I will need to file the front sight a little bit when I finally can devote a few hours to sighting in and load development.

The rifle is cut with a generous amount of pull which makes the sights line up automatically when shouldered.  I am truly blessed to be able to own two of Mike's creations.

William,
It is obvious that your rifle is shooting low but before I filed anything off the front sight, I would work at getting your group tightened up. I would play with the charge you are shooting as well as the patches, that group should be 1/3, or less than where you are. Once you get a good tight group then it will be time to move the group into the black. Remember, no matter what you do, consistency is all important. That relates to sight picture, loading procedure, ball size and patch. If you are using a bench to sight in, be certain to rest the rifle at the same place every time.

Papa, I appreciate your advice.  Yesterday was just a chance to get out and pop some caps on a rifle that I've not had a chance to shoot due to the illness I went through last year.  When I get a chance to spend a few hours at the range I will do a full load work up using Dutch Schoultz's dry lube recipe.  I already know that it's shooting the center left/right using .018 mattress ticking cut at the muzzle and 75 grains of 3f Goex.  The two flyers happened when I used some very old pre-cut/lubed round patches, out of convenience and my desire not to waste anything.  In other words, I was just there to be able to say that I finally shot it after receiving this fine rifle over 14 months ago and for the joy of smelling and hearing real black powder go off.

Hopefully this rifle will be no less accurate than Big Red, my other Mongrel rifle.  It's a .54 with a cherry stock instead of maple.  I also realize that even with a Numrich barrel, the bore on my new(ish) rifle will need a bit of final polish and break in.  Perhaps not to the extent that most Lyman barrels need but some, nonetheless.  Big Red has a Lyman Trade Rifle barrel on her and didn't start getting laser accuracy until there was about 100 rounds put through her.

My TVM Virginia flintlock, also a .50 likes 65 grains of 3f so I'm thinking that this one will prefer that size grain and similar powder charge but I will also see how 2f does as that's what Big Red does best with and I have several pounds of it.

Anyone have experience with Numrich barrels and their break in period?  I have to go back and see if I'm correct in actually having that make of barrel as I've been wrong before.  Going to order some JB's bore paste right now too; good stuff that I've used in the past.

I've found, on the few Numrich barrels I've messed with, that the rifleing is rather shallow and really didn't need a lot of breaking in. In case you find either some rough spots or sharp edges I'd use fine valve grinding compound. Put it on a few patches and run the heck out of them and then lube a half dozen with the valve grinding compound next time you go to the range and shoot them. You'll be amazed at what it will do to a barrel as far as slicking it up.
