Title: My Southern Rifle build
Post by: CampbellClan on December 20, 2014
Well...with the help of a couple of friends I completed my first ever build. It's a Southern Mountain rifle copied from an original. The rifle was started from a block of wood and done almost all bu hand ( except the ramrod channel) The project was started in May and completed about a week ago. It features a 40 inch Douglas barrel, Late Ketland lock by Chambers, L&R set triggers, trigger gaurd from TOW and a  maple blank. All else was made by hand.  This was inspired by some of Ken Nettings work, as he was gracious enough to help me along and give great advice whenever called upon. Fred Woods ( Woody) was a great influence as well, though he probably doesn't realize it..and The guy who helped me the most asked me to not give his name, I will honor that but will say.. he is a MASTER craftsman and a true gentleman as well....also has became a good friend along the way. Without his help I couldn't have done this.... it started like this.  (http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l610/fourwheelhorseman1/0424141755a.jpg) (http://s1126.photobucket.com/user/fourwheelhorseman1/media/0424141755a.jpg.html)

I kinda like them French fried pertaters....Oh wait a minute, that's Billy Bob Thornton's line. I like them Southern Mountain and Tennessee rifles. BTW my great grandmother was a Campbell. She was born in the East Indies. It looks like her father was from Dumfries Scotland.  hi:

I have the ENTIRE family tree of my line of Campbells current up to 1999. Its a rather large and extensive book. We came from Dumfries as well.. then got kicked out of Scotland for thieving horses and being generally rowdy. Went to Ireland..then to the New World..and here I am!...

That's a fine looking rifle Kary. I knew you would do fine but I think it will always be your favorite build, not just that it was your first and turned out great, but for the journey and new friendships you have formed on that journey. Well done my friend..well done.  thmbsup

Was there a Michael or Archibald in your line ? Michael married an Irish gal before he joined the British Army then bound for India. His daughter Ellen was my great grandmother, born in 1856. One of Ellen's son was named Archibald.  hi:
