Post by: windwalker_au on November 05, 2014
a friend got a knife of ebay made in china the guy runs a site on ebay from china, my pal has bought stuff from this seller before. he came round and showed me the knife I was very impressed with it the fit and finish ebony scales acid etched hammered blade nice sheath and it held a good edge, the blade is 4 3/4" long 3/16" thick so I order one it came this morning razor sharp went and cut some bamboo with it and it was still shaving sharp very good knife and it only cost me $32.00 with shipping  it is a steal at that price.

imitation dramascus but still a very nice blade for the price... If it holds an edge it is a tool to be used, no matter where it comes from.

Sometimes, rarely but sometimes, you can buy products from China that are of good quality. It looks like you found one of them.

Sooo, how can you tell fake Damascus from the real stuff?. Any quick way? It would be nice to know in case someone runs into one at a flea market or Yard Sale. Also a off topic question, how do you tell Stainless from good old Carbon steel?.

fake damascus usually looks fake . but not always ,so it can be hard to tell .with  real damascus  even if you hand polish the blade to where you dont see the pattern as it shows when acid etched ( all damascus is etched to bring out the pattern ) will still show a faint pattern in the right light . the same way you see the layering in an old japanese sword  (the layers of steel , not the hamon ) they`ll be faint but still visible ! stainless on the other hand if good quality stainless , and there is such a thing can be hard to tell until it either rusts or does`nt ! lol  I have a spanish clasp knife I`ve owned since 1984 , not a bit of rust , sharpens up very well and holds the edge better than most knives I`ve owned ! it`s stainless , but it`s different from the usual cheap cr*p you can pick up for a buck or two ! that knife cost $35 bucks back then .  when I look for carbon steel knives I tend to look for either older used knives or a dealer who specifically states that his blades are high carbon ! you gotta watch the dealers , I`ve bought one or two "high carbon steel " knives that wont rust , dont even work up a decent patina ! that tells me the guy lied ! carbon steel will darken , cutting a potato will slightly darken a blade , so  will a bit of mustard , but you cant check the steel that way when making a decision !ask questions , lots of them , then decide irf you`ll buy it or pass on it !

If I had it in my hand it would be easy to tell the difference, but hard to describe. You can see the layers is about the best I can do.  Carbon steel does not look at all kike stainless, usually darker. Stainless shines like the sun...

rev knows what he`s talking about  thmbsup even a satin finish on stainless is brighter than a good polish on carbon steel !
