Title: Knives for fun
Post by: hotfxr on July 07, 2014
Since my daughter & son in law have been making toothpicks out of my wood rounds with the hawks, I tried to trip them up with knives. They got fairly proficient with the HC throwing knife I had but were arguing over who got to throw it so I decided to make a couple more. Here they are.

The one on the left is the original forged knife. The next one is one of two I cut out of 1/8" stainless but they are just a bit too light and tend to bend. The third one is out of 1/4" SS and took a lot of grinding and cutting to make it. The leather scales are glued on until the rivets I ordered come in and it does throw quite nice. I have enough steel to make 5 more but that will be it because they require hours & hours of grinding & polishing. Not very PC i know, and they are tougher than, well steel, but they are fun to throw. Once I get my daughter moved to Chicago and things calm  down here a bit, then I will finish my forge and start making a couple of PC knives. But for now we are just having fun with them.

I am sure there is a rule about it somewhere around here and I should have them wrapped in a non removable metal and rubber guard whereby there is no possible way I can hurt myself or others in any circumstance.  hdslp  But until I am caught and incarcerated for said activities I shall continue on my noble quest to make things that you can hurt yourself with.   ROFL

"Once I get my daughter moved to Chicago"

What crime did your daughter commit to get sentenced to Chicago?  :'(

I was born there and the smartest thing I ever did was leave .. long ago.

Sentenced to a one year internship for her Doctorate in Psychology. I'm not too happy about it but it will let me have a nice cross country trip with her. Now if I can figure out a way to get home without flying, then I will be set. Trying to get a gig ferrying a car back this way. Then I can stop of in some place called Oklahoma and teach Red Badger how to throw a tomahawk.  ROFL

Been making some more throwing knives and feeling pretty full of myself to the point of getting a sore elbow from patting myself on the back over my blossoming edged weapon throwing skills. Forgot that what goes up, always comes down. Took off Sunday morning to join the Frontloaders for their monthly shoot at the not-even-remotely-close-to-local range I belong to, ready to wow the old furry hat guys with my superior skills using both blades and thundersticks. (Yes I actually shot a couple of the safe queens.) Took the trusty Jukar flintlock and wound up being served a huge slice of humble pie as I succumbed to the dreaded flinch-lock disease that I hassle others about. Had so many dud trigger pulls I was giving serious consideration to sending that rifle to Dogshirt to have it converted into tool stock. Got a bit rattled an hour or so into the competition and learned first hand what a "dryball" is. I don't like dryballs, they are evil and make grown men in old clothes and carrying guns laugh at you. Red faced and chagrined I retreated to the edge of the range and packed those offending firearms away for the long trip home while the rest of the participants finished shooting.

Figured I would make up for my embarrassing display of marksmanship with an amazing show of blade skills for a couple of gents who have been helping me with edged weapon throwing skills. Apparently I figured wrong. After the lecture about practicing with bad technique only makes you better at throwing wrong, I got to spend an hour or so getting some top notch instruction and coaching on proper knife and hawk throwing. It seems that you indeed can teach an old dog new tricks. I had brought my entire (so far) collection of knives up and after a lot of slow explanation using small words that I could understand, as soon as I got home I re-worked the blades of all the knives. I still have a bit of tweaking to do on some of them, but I think that they are vastly improved from before.
What? Pictures? Of course.

Here are all of them after a day of grinder work. The (bought) single edged and the modified K-BAR are here just for reference. They are all approximately 13" long by 1 7/8" wide with #12 leather scales and copper rivets.

These three are made from 1/4" Stainless Steel.

These are the first two I made, 1/8" stainless with a stiffener welded to both sides of one of them cause it kept bending.

These two are from 1/4" steel.

Like the hawks I made, there is no forging involved here. These were just ground down (we are talking many hours with an angle grinder) from scrap steel I got from the scrap bin at a local steel company. This is Traditional Muzzleloaders on the Cheap after all. The modifications were worth it. Now they are all a bit lighter and better balanced than before.

I won't lie, it took about 15 tries to get these to hit where they are, but they are much easier on the arms now and a lot more fun. And isn't that what it's all about anyway?

That poor old dead tree, finally got it cut up and hauled to the neighbors next door (who still have a fireplace) and leveled off the ground where it once stood. Of course the gazebo is only hanging on by a couple of boards and three potato vines. It seems that during the going away party for my daughter, there were several young men trying to prove how strong they were so in addition to breaking 4 or 5 hawk handles, they blew out the gazebo rails in the front and back. Oh well, it was coming down anyway and soon will be becoming part of the deck in the back yard. All is good in Hotfxrville.  chrrs By the way Mr. D, I discovered that the flint in my rifle was loose in the jaws. Tightened it up a bit and tripled the sparks so you are not going to get a new wire tightener any time too soon.   blah   ROFL
