Title: At last, found a wheel.
Post by: hotfxr on February 08, 2014, 10:23:54 PM
I have been looking for a decent sharpening wheel for a long time. At last I scored a deal on Ebay. For years I have been reluctantly using an angle grinder to put an edge on axes, hawks, yard tools and sometimes chisels, knowing that I was doing the wrong thing, but really having no alternative at hand. This beastie has a 22" wheel and the motor turns it at 350 RPM. I paid $200 bucks for it and I am very pleased. (Now of course I will take time to let the masses inform me that I was taken and I shouldn't be allowed to roam around unsupervised.) It does need a little tweaking, but nothing I can't take care of in a couple of hours of playing around. I have already used it to put razor sharp edges on a couple of my already sharp Hawks.

In this ever increasingly "throw it away and buy another one" world that we are living in, I am bound and determined to regress to the days when we actually maintained and repaired our tools.

Give me a couple of weeks to fine tune everything, and send 'em on over. Better yet, stop on by, I always keep a jug or two of the good stuff on hand for friends and family.   chrrs

That has been the problem in my search for one of these. Almost all of them were "pickup only" and 90% were East of the Mississippi. (And a few in England) There were a couple in Southern Cal but this one was about 70 miles from me and and on the way to an event I had to work at so it was "on the way" and worked out well.

Piece of cake. I have a Hi-Jack so there will be no strain. Of course you may not want it now. I went ahead and tuned it up a bit.

Took the reduction gears and the motor apart, cleaned them up and with a bit of re-wiring and a switch it now runs great. Now I just have to figure out how to build a proper shroud and a tool rest. It's too bad, I know you don't like them all fixed up.

Actually, if I had pedals I most likely wouldn't give everyone around it a shower when I turn it on.   ROFL

If this be the case,  you need to drain off some water.  Only need enough water to tease the stone wheel.

Or install a flat-belt scraper flap on up side of wheel.

This is very sound advice.  I remember seeing this type set up, years ago when I  sharpened  cooks knives

I am far from the sharpest chisel in the pouch, but I am on my third incarnation of installing sweeps. When I finally find the right combo, pictures will be posted.

hotfxr,  there is one more item that has been nagging at me since I saw how you upgraded the wheel.  JMHO, but I don't feel it is a good idea to paint the wheel.  Have you ever seen what happens to the brick on a brick house when it is painted?  In time, since the brick can no longer breath, it becomes soft and over time begins to deteriorate.  again, JMHO.

That is good to know. It had a lot of calcium & crud built up on it and I was worried  that that stuff was going to decompose the stone. I put the red paint on to do some timing (plus some tape going across the diameter) and checking for true when it was turning. But I didn't really think it through as the paint will do the same damage that the built up crud would do. I will take it off in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the heads up!

well as far as the masses telling you that "you were taken" I seem to agree with those replys that it was a great deal and it is a good looking wheel. dntn
