Title: Roman nose stocks
Post by: Dryball on October 15, 2008, 02:28:37 AM
I have a bit of a gripe with present day blackpowder rifle company's. The ones I have experience with all make a rifle that they usually call a Pennyslvania Rifle. In every case these gun's come with a roman nose stock. Now the originals were designed to be fired off the shoulder and had a low comb for offhand shooting...the modern copies raise the comb to suit people who are used to modern hunting rifles. If you try to shoot one of these modern replicas without very carefully placing your face just so...your going to have a badly bruised cheek after a few shots. Why do company's like Traditions, Pedersoli, Lyman and others insist on torturing there customers? All that they would have to do to vastly improve there rifles would be to lower there rifle combs. Very few people use these rifles with scopes, and those who do can raise the comb easily with a slip on pad.

Ned,   That's why hardware stores sell wood rasp, files, and sandpaper to folke like you and me.

Yes, I know...but why should I be forced to support my local hardware store due to manufacturers stupidity?

It's for the same reasons that the traditional style rifles are fading from the market. Companies are in business to make money, and at some point the market (consumers) decided that was what they wanted and the companies shifted their production line to what the general market wanted. This same line of thinking is why nobody compay in the U.S. produces a traditional M/L anymore, the main stream market has shifted to in-lines. All of the traditional rifles are imports now because of the cost to profit margin involved in building them. even with a factory wood stock there is still an amount of fitting and finish time in building a traditional gun vs. building a plastic stocked 15 minutes of assembly inline. This same thought process is the ruling line when it comes to traditional stocks, the factory produced a certain style at some point that was a market seller, and now as the market dwindles they aren't going to retool unless they know that there is going to be a steep enough rise in the market to justify the cost.

The end result is poorly made rifle, mass produced for quantity instead of quality.

Hey ned,  Did the swelling go down yet around that eye and cheek yet?  Next time you shoot the Pedersoli and  CVA try keeping your head up off the stock a little more.  This way you will be able to see the target better and be able to shoot with your eyes open.  No more flinching, no more bruised and battered cheek bones, and accuracy might improve too.

Yes, accuracy might improve at that....if I have my face up high enough to clear the cheekpiece I couldn't see the sights and maybe that might help. Thanks Bullfrog. By the way, do your avatar and signature suit you now? And my face still looks like I lost a battle with Old Ephram.

Yes...those were the days, still had all my hair....didn't need a rifle scope to see that squirrel target at 35 yards....and my shooting pardner didn't need first aid after a shooting session.  Like the avitar....But you will eat those words after the next shoot!

If I remember correctly, you stood by and laughed your fool head off when you saw the right side of my face...said I looked like a squirrel with a coconut in my right cheek. I still whoped yor butt shootin, even tho I'ze bleedin like a stuk pig! I'm going up Sunday for a little period trek and some shooting so you'll have to work some to shoot even half as good as me. Those words are gonna stay from now on!

Well Ned, your going to need that extra practice now I got my new flinter.  Its a real beauty too!  Mr. Roundball throwed in some extras too, even a new vent pick and pan brush on a chain.  Can't beat that for a deal.  I might have some flints I had a long time that may fit your little flint gun, I don't know how good they are but you can try them.
