Couldn't stand it any longer. I started my sixth build today (first for 2014). It is going to be a .56 cal. 36 inch round tapered Netting barrel, Walnut stock and a Chamber's Queen Ann lock. The stock blank was given to me by a dear friend of mine before he sold his farm and move to Tennessee last fall, it was stored in the loft of his barn for about 15 - 20 years. It dose have some nice figure so I hope I don't mess it up. Anyway, given that the wood was a gift from a close friend and the barrel was made for me by good friend, this is one I really want to turn out right so I will be taking all the time I need to complete it. I'll post updates as I can.

Here we go again, watchin' your builds is becoming a habit...Looks like a good one woody...Tom
wtch
wtch I like that already!
The weather has been keeping me out of the shop for quite some time but I was able to get quite a bit done the last few days. Trimmed some of the bulk wood so I could chiseled the barrel and ramrod channels, inlet the lock, and got two forward ramrod thimbles.....can't wait for Spring!!!
I am using Ted Cash round fowler pipes.....still need to do the entry pipe.
Now this looks to be another truly great one. thmbsup
wtch I will be a watchin this close. If my first scratch build turns out have as nice as your builds i will be tickled.
Happy belated birthday WOODY!!!! I didn't forget just couldn't get to the phone. See you coming along real good on another build. Looks like your"ll going to be building a gun rack or two so you can display those babies. I love watching you and gunmaker build these flinters just keep on so I can learn somthing thmbsup
Went to Ken's yesterday and got a lesson on making the butt plate. I got it installed then removed a good amount of the excess wood. Also started making a trigger.
lookin forward to seein the finished piece !
I finally got to spend a little time in the shop and moved forward on this again. I finished shaping the trigger, made my trigger guard, got the rear entry pipe installed, and started some rough stock shaping.

Lookin good woody, like that "traditional WALNUT. ....Tom
VERY NICE!!! I LIKE the traditional walnut! I am thinking about building a fusil for my first build... when I DO a first build.. chrrs
Here are a few photos of the fowler progress. Pretty much just rough shaped but she's beginning to look like a fowler. I made the side plate today also and still need to make the front sight get it installed and put the vent liner in, then some detail shaping, and it will be ready for sanding and finish.

I like the way this is looking. dntn
Nice piece of wood!!!!
Nice job on the side plate!!! I really like it!! Looking real good and can't wait to see it finished out dntn thmbsup
Looking great as always. I readily admit to spending most of my life "unclear on the concept" so I am asking a rather doltish question. What characteristics and/or details make a fowler a "Fowler"?

hdslp You're getting much too metaphysical for this bunch.

A fowler is smoothbore flintlock, long barrel gun used with shot to hunt birds and small game. This build is in the English style, but will only have a 38 inch barrel. It was not unusual to see originals with 4 foot barrels. They could range from plain to very ornate.

so far it`s looking good ! nice piece of wood there !
Hi Woody, That's gonna be a pretty gun. Perhaps it's just the photo but I'm concerned about the grain of your stock wood particularly at the wrist area. I'm certainly not trying to be critical, only hoping to point out a potential issue in the future. I've seen walnut with figure that runs across the grain before similar to what the curl in maple does. Perhaps this is what you've got. Hard to tell from your photos.
In either case, it sure is a gorgeous piece of walnut. From your previous builds I'm sure that you'll be able to handle any issues should they arise anyway.

Hi Kevin,
I'm not really to concerned with the grain, though I am leaving the wrist a little thicker than I originally intended just in case, in addition to the fact I've never been a shooter that feels one needs a magnum load in my guns.
Plus this build was inspired and is connected to three very close friends...one gave me the wood, one made the barrel, and one owns an original that inspired the style.
Thanks for everyone's comments and input. thmbsup
That's coming right along Woody. I have to agree that the walnut sure looks good. Be cool if you could find a walnut dowel for a ram. maybe you can fool with some of the scrap to find a stain mix to match the stock's final color.
thmbsup wtch
Well it's about 99% finished, still need to finish the metal, fine sanding and the blo. Then get Ken to do a little engraving, I still haven't jumped into that part of the pool yet ! :o

Here is the latest on the fowler progress. Ken gave me my first carving lesson today, he cut in my design and I'm doing the sanding and finishing. I also got the side plate inlet this evening, now I'm down to some engraving then I can get all the wood and metal finish work done.
Well No. 6 is mostly finished, though I will be posting final photos after she's got a little engraving on her and I add a little patina.

Thanks guys. Kary the map came from the souvenir shop at Fort Meggs.

The word "awesome" comes to mind.
thmbsup Woody I'm here to tell ya that is one fine build. Ya should be proud.
Thanks everyone. I am very happy with it. As I mentioned earlier it is special to me because the beautiful walnut blank was a gift from a very close friend before he move to Tennessee, the general style caliber and barrel length were copied from a original owned by another close friend, the barrel was made by my good friend and mentor Ken Netting who also did the engraving. Plus it's a perfect mate to my first scratch build (#1) pistol, same lock, caliber smooth bore!! ;D
Woody CampbellClan and I were talking at last Sundays shoot and we both agree you have a lot of talent and are getting better with each project.
Enjoy and keep up the good work! thmbsup
