Title: keeping powder in horn ,how long?
Post by: Tim Ault on November 12, 2013, 11:51:35 PM
So I bought this small day horn from track of wolf  last spring ,didnt like the wood stopper in it so I made a new one from a small spike antler seems like it seals up real well and looks nice but my question is how long do you all recommend keeping powder in the horn ? I put some in mine last weekend when I went out hunting ,Checked it tonight and powder seems OK  would it be ok till the end of the season which is like mid January ? it will be kept stored in the house of course.

Thanks,Tim

It should be ok indefinitely if it stays dry. Being in a horn doesn't cause it to go bad.

Thank you gentlemen , just didn't know if a horn was any different than the steel or plastic container that it's normally stored in .

Black will keep just fine in the horn but the substitutes will degrade. I assume that you are using real black powder, so no problem its how the oldtime guys did it.
