Hi all, I am looking to make a hatband for my Charles Bent hat, for those of you who aren't familiar with it..it's a black with a 3 3/4 inch crown and a 4" brim.I am using it in the late 1700's time frame. So what kind of hatband would an Eastern Long hunter have on his hat? I have access to all manner of beads and simulated sinew.I am planning on using a turkey feather as well.
You're better of beadless for that time frame. A nice woven tape would be nice. Or use a plain piece of leather with a small harness buckle.
What would you consider a "woven tape"? I'm not familiar with this term. I can come up with a small harness buckle... how about the turkey feather? Then would you attach it all to the hat? or leave it floating with the fear of it possibly falling off.. which would be my luck, I'd prolly spend hours making it, only to lose it in the woods on the first woodswalk. pnic
You might look at inkle weaving. I have done a couple of hat bands and a small (1/2" or so) diced pattern looks good on a round crown hat like that.

The main reson being that seed beads (size 10 on up) were not available until mid 1800's. Your time period would be pony beads which are huge and you could only get 3 to a row... a rawhide or braded sinew strap might look nice if your brading skills are up to it and would be a source or repair material should you need it... Alway thinking of the time period and living on the edge....
I used jute twine to braid this. I've also use these for horn straps....do the hat look familiar Mr. Clan ? thmbsup
Nice work !
I need another hatband Woody.... I used the last one for a powder horn strap..... thmbsup....trade one for a rifle box... blah

I killed a rattlesnake, kept the head and rattle on it, skinned it, and cured it, then used it for the band. head and rattles are on the front. different, and everyone wants it. We have two dens on the ranch, so my son began making hat bands for friends til he got tired of it.
