Title: Some new gear.
Post by: Ranger on March 05, 2013
Here are a couple items I have purchased recently in an effort to improve my kit. I do an Ohio Valley settler during the early Rev War in the Pittsburgh to Wheeling area. My wife and I volunteer and demonstrate at Shoenbrunn Village in Tucarawas County Ohio.

Here is the new hatchet I purchased from the RE Davis Company. It is a replica of a hatchet that was excavated from an early Virginia fortified house. This is a cast head that has been further forged to shape.

This is an English Scalper or "fish" knife sold in many of the northern trade posts and forts from about 1755 thru the Rev and even up into fur trade times. This one was produced by Ken Hamilton of Maine from many excavated originals and from period accounts from the trading posts descibing the knife. These knives were produced by the ton back in Sheffield for sale in the colonies. This one has a 6" upswept blade with a 2" "half tang" and a cocobolo handle of 4" with a diamond faceted shape. It also has has a generic Sheffield touchmark on the oppisite side of the blade. I didn't take a good picture of it...  hdslp   It was supplied from Ken with an 18th century style center seam sheath that has been wet formed and sealed with generous amounts of bear grease and bees wax.

I will try to take a pic of the touch mark when I get home this evening and post it tomorrow. Thanks for looking guys!  thmbsup
