I needed some garters for my leggingsand I was wanting some inkle loomed ones, but thought I'd give quilling a go first. This is my first real try at quilling, I hope to get better with more practice.
I must say quill work sucks! It takes forever, and washing and dying quills is mighty painful work!
Here be the first one, now to tackle the second. I may try my hand at some quill line work as well, but maybe not.....we will see.

And not a single stitch of quill work on the back side.
And then I added the line work and started on the second one.

Nice, are you O.K. my youngest son, 25 tried that I thought we might have to have him committed. That is a HARD craft to learn...Tom
Had snow day, and this may have saved me!
looks quite tedious! [hmm]
Looking good ! Bulldog Lady has done some and all I will say is the results are worth the effort
Great job! :applause: :applause: Sticky hobby - you'll be suprised where all those little barbed ends you cut off end up pnic I've never tried dyeing them, beautiful colors. You buy your quills or are they native to Neb? if you are really into quilling - have a book "The Technique of Porcupine Quill Decoration Among the Indians of North America" Willliam c. Orchard bought it way back when, publ 84. Anyway a great little book. Think it is still available. Got lots more questions like to ask you. Keep posting pics -
Yup, native to Nebraska. These quills came from a road killed pig. Dying them wasn't too hard, just have to make sure ya wash them good before trying to dye them, as the fatty oils on them can keep the dye from taking. Believe it or not I used different flavors of koolaid to dye them. Mixed it up with just alittle water and soaked them for bit. I hope to try some natural dyes this summer.
Nice job. Hope they didn't have to send you to the blood bank for a withdrawl!!
New use for roadkill! Wish had some down here but all we got are coon and armadillos and ?. Kinda pricy buying from vendors and very assorted in size, think that is what takes the most time, sorting One thing have read is don't do like the Indians and soak in mouth to soften as has a toxin in them, several articles read use Rit dye. Also the "Book of Buckskinning III has a really good article on quill work. Great job anyway and do keep it up, hate to see the old skills lost. I had problem finding leather that could slip thru with out showing on back. commercial stuff just to tuff.
