i thought the spindle n fire board had to be a soft wood

I looked around pretty hard for about six months and found a rock with an indent in it that would hold the spindle.  Megwetch, Sinnanatha

I use a piece of antler that the rats did not get completely chewed up

No, one should be hard, the other soft. I use a block of soapstone.
