Title: awls
Post by: Plainsman on October 22, 2012
Got gifted a small anvil, and had to play. I may be hooked already! I used old nails for the steel and a bigger ball peen hammer, vise grips and my propane torch. I see me spending too much money on another hobby I don't really need!

The anvil needs alot of work, but hey it was free!

I started out with a torch. I made awls, vent picks, blanket pins and what not.
From the pics it looks like you have got a good start and are doing good work.
Not sure of your location but if you decide to get in deeper I would suggest going farm and estate auctions. Some times you can get some real bargains on tong and hammers and some times you will think they are pure gold for the prices they bring
You biggest expense will be a good forge and anvil. Start small and work up.

you mean like we did ........ but Ol Salt is right this can get to where it will cost you an arm and a leg if you don't take your time just watch you local papers farm auctions craigs list talk to friends ect. and you can find them they are out there and if you wait you can catch a good deal I've picked up a forge and blower for under 100 and know where 2 more are but they will need some love to get them back up to shape

Agree with both of preceeding posts, have one of those want to's at home, slow but sure wins the race.  Staerted with a tub of cat litter clay forge thingy  and now has begining of real one. patience, patience and shop, shop, bargan, trade ,etc,  Back to awls, the one use most is a file of some kind sharpened out to nice point and set in horn, made for right hand- they also had some make for lefties. Great for piercing leather for stiitching or bead work.  just my two cents worth.
