Title: Thomas Jefferson Quote.
Post by: cward on August 07, 2012, 04:45:38 PM
This passage is from a letter written by Jefferson to his nephew Peter Carr Dated 19 august 1785  "A strong mind makes the body strong. As to the species of exercise,I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games with the ball and others of that nature are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind.Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks."      Sounds like good advice to me! ;D thmbsup

Excellent quote. Cward, you can go in and fix the mis-quote -- just click on "modify" at the top of the box containing your original post, and edit the text that appears. I'd do it for you but you make two references to a "strong body" and sure as anything if I edit one, it'll be the wrong one.

I'm reminded of a line in a western called "The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid" that I saw in the drive-in with my parents, long ago. The James-Younger gang come upon a group of guys playing baseball and ask what's going on. A spectator informs them it's baseball, and calls it something along the lines of the great American sport or great American pasttime. To which one of the gang matter-of-factly says, "No, sir, shooting is the great American pasttime."

With all the emphasis placed on sports in this country, we need to remember that bit of wisdom from a Hollywood outlaw.
